MMO Co-Opportunities Volume LXXVIII: Storms and Legends

Overviews of the FF14: Stormblood and Secret World Legends launches

This summer is off to a really strong start for MMO players. Following the launch of ESO: Morrowind at the end of May, some other big titles landed at the end of June after June’s column went out, so we’ll be doubling back into June to take a look at them in this July’s issue of MMO Co-Opportunities. Specifically, we’ll be covering the launch of FF14: Stormblood and the relaunch/reboot of Secret World Legends

Final Fantasy 14: Stormblood Now Live
Possibly the highest-anticipated MMO-related release for the summer, Stormblood (FF14’s expansion) released on June 20th. This enormous expansion introduces two new jobs (Red Mage and Samurai), revamps of the cross-class skill system, introduces better functioning Job Gauges, refines PVP, and massively expands the world with new zones and quests. As is a staple of most MMO expansions, Stormblood raises the level cap from 60 to 70 and introduces new dungeons, a new 8-person raid (Interdimensional Rift-Omega) and a new 24-person alliance raid (Return to Ivalice).

Since new classes are generally a big draw for people when it comes to MMO expansions, I wanted to focus on the Red Mage and the Samurai jobs. Red Mages wield rapiers with magic crystals set in the pommels, allowing them to be melee fighter/ranged caster hybrids. Their Job Gauge has White and Black mana, which are gained by casting white magic and black magic respectively. So long as both mana types are in balance with each other, Red Mages have access to special enchanted weaponskills, which expend the entire gauge. If the gauge becomes too unbalanced in favor of either type of magic, however, they won’t be able to use these enchanted weaponskills until they return to a balanced state.

Samurai unsurprisingly wield katana and focus on a melee DPS role. They have two unique Job Gauges, the first of which tracks the accumulation of their three Sen effects: Setsu, Getsu, and Ka. These Sen effects come into play whenever they use their Iaijutsu skill; If they’ve accumulated all three Sen effects, the Midare Setsugekka weaponskill is executed, if two then the Tenka Goken weaponskill is executed, and if only one then the Higanbana weaponskill is executed. Their other Job Gauge is the Kenki Gauge which keeps track of the amount of Kenki they’ve acquired. Most Samurai skills either build Kenki or spend it for powerful effects.

These two new jobs sound pretty fun to me, and that’s coming from someone who’s never spent any time in a Final Fantasy MMO.

Secret World Legends Now Released, Elite Dungeons Introduced
Secret World Legends, the free-to-play overhaul of The Secret World, also launched late June. Currently it’s only playable via a Funcom launcher, but it’s coming to Steam in late July if you really need the Steam integration.

We covered the its announcement back in April, but for those of you who might have missed it, Secret World Legends is a complete reboot with no characters being carried over and it is completely free-to-play. Players of the original Secret World can still play the old version of the game with their existing characters, but they won’t be able to do it via Steam anymore (they have to get the Funcom launcher). Secret World Legends(SWL) supports the “TSW Legacy Transfer system,” however, which allows returning players to link their TSW and SWL accounts to copy over any remaining membership time as well as most unlocked cosmetics, pets, sprints, and emotes. This will only be available until some undetermined date in August, however, so if this system applies to you, I’d recommend doing it sooner rather than later.

Though SWL has only been live for a couple of weeks, Update 2.0.1 landed last week, which adds some exciting tweaks and additions to the game. Of greatest interest is the introduction of the Elite Dungeon System. Elite Dungeons take pre-existing Story Dungeons and provide more challenge over a whopping 10 difficulty levels (Elite 1 to Elite 10). Higher difficulty means better loot, with Elite 1 through Elite 4 steadily upping the difficulty, while Elite 5 through Elite 10 introduce whole new challenges. As of Update 2.0.1, Elite difficulty is now available for the following dungeons: The Polaris, Darkness War, Hell Raised, Hell Eternal, and the Ankh. Additional dungeons will receive Elite Mode in future updates.

It’s certainly a great time to be a Final Fantasy 14 or Secret World player. Are you playing either of these games? If so, how are they treating you in light of these major updates?
