The Co-Optimus staff is working away vigorously to determine the Co-Op Game of the Year, and we'll have that to you shortly. But while you wait you may want to check out GamesRadar, who posted an article covering the same thing. I'm not sure what gives them the authority to judge co-op, after all, they aren't the prime source of co-op gaming info - but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
In fact the GR folks bring on ten editors to examine the lot of games...and trust us...it's a huge lot. They weigh in on zombie modes, horde modes, online modes and more. But what's most surprising is their lack of any music games like Rock Band.
With the year just about over - what are some of your standout co-op games of the year? If you had to choose just one game this year that really stood out for it's co-op experience, what would it be?

I wanted badly to say Fable 2 at the beginning of the year, but no way. L4D is it, though if I play more Gears 2 that might climb up more.
I wouldn't bash L4D that hard -- it really is a great game, it's just not on my "family atmosphere" reference chart. Nazi Zombies are so much more cheesy, and I like the gun selection and the controls better. With so many games and so little time to play, the casual nature of Nazi Zombies fits my bill.
I really don't dislike L4D at all...but as you'll read in our Co-Optimus "Best Of" list, a lot of how we determine our personal favorite depends heavily on what's available to us. I missed the boat on Left 4 Dead (I used up all of my "Executive Orders" already this year...see here) so far...maybe next year.
And believe it or not, World at War is NOT my favorite game of the year. You'll see.
I really enjoyed the first and second games in that series, but it sort of dropped off after that.
Going back to Splinter Cell I loved the first one, never could get into the sequels though.
You mentioned RPG elements, that would be well to see. I'd love to have stats to increase with each time I've played through a game.
There is a web browser zombie game that has the elements I am talking about however not the GUI to go with it.
They could take versus to the extreme where if a player is killed by the zombies they come back as a zombie, the longer you stay alive the more you mutate into various stages of special infected... something along those lines would be ideal.
My co-op goty goes for Left 4 dead. 4 players co-op, drop-in/drop-out, you can pee and the AI will control your characters, you can vote for difficult change without going to a lobby, players must cooperate in order to win... this is how co-op should always be!!!
I'll also second the motion to have a game like L4D, but with RPG or slower, strategy elements.
