Tips for Surviving 'How to Survive'

Food, water, shelter, and pre purchasing offer some comfort on your undead journey

The top down zombie shooter genre sure is full of options. Some may add small quirks here and there, but at the end of the day, they are largely similar. This is why we’re so excited for How to Survive. This title, coming to PC, XBLA, PSN, and Wii U, brings a hoard of new features and gameplay mechanics that turns the game into more than a mindless shooter – you really are playing to survive.

The new trailer details some of the unique features, and we can’t wait to sink our teeth into the title.

Zombies aren’t the only ones who eat

Players will need to regularly intake food and water to stay alive, and it’s not as simple as finding random pickups. You’ll be given the opportunity to hunt and fish for food, and cook up something fierce over a campfire. Players will also locate wells and water sources to keep a constant supply of hydration at the ready.

“I’ll sleep when I’m (un)dead”

Fighting off zombies can be tiring, and as a survivor stranded on an isolated island there isn’t exactly a Four Seasons at the ready. You’ll need to find shelter to make it through the night, and hope whatever you’re in is enough to keep the undead at bay.

Should have paid attention in craft class

With no drugstores or gun shops to raid, much of what you use will be created on the fly. With 20 different plants to discover, you can take a crack and preparing some homemade remedies to tend to your wounds. Similarly, there are over 100 objects to combine into all sorts of weaponry, so use your imagination and find something that sticks. Don’t get too attached though, as it’s easy to swap a single item out and completely change your attack.

How to Survive features 2 player local co-op through the story of the game, as well as an additional online co-op challenge mode with 8 levels. The game launches on October 31 for $14.99, and is currently on sale for $10.49 via pre purchase on Steam.
