Amazon/Best buy/whoever else have been doing special deals like this for a while - starting just before Black Friday, mostly "this weekend only!" sort of things. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of this as promotional stuff, too.
My theory on it; if people have cheap gold accounts, they'll buy more co-op/multiplayer arcade games, and everyone wins.
