Resident Evil 5 Requires a 5GB Install on the PS3

Just a quick PSA - if you are planning on snagging Resident Evil 5 this Friday on the PlayStation 3, you might want to make sure you have enough free space on your drive as the game is going to require a 5GB install to get up and running.  It would be quite embarrassing to try to set up a co-op session with a buddy only to have to say - "sorry dude, I gotta clear up some hard drive space."

This isn't anything new for PS3 owners, as plenty of games have had the requirement, but if you own a 20GB PS3 you are probably juggling a lot of saved games and installs to get stuff to fit.

We just got our Xbox 360 copy of the game in the Co-Optitower and our first impression is it's quite a bit better than the demo.  There's plenty of tense moments, and the co-op is absolutely top notch so far.  Plenty of opportunities to work together - except of course when you burn your partner in the furnace...accidentally.  More on that later this week!

I have the 40GB hard drive, and I had enough trouble installing UT3 which is half that size... Good thing about the PS3 is the harddrive is easily swappable and cheap!

poor PS3 gets the shaft again. Maybe if the downloads didn't take so long, it wouldn't be so bad...I predict a 2 hour update.

One of the first things I did with my ps3 was upgrade the hard drive to 300Gb so I wouldn't have to worry about things like this.

Upgrading the hard drive is very easy, I followed a guide from IGN.

Yeah, its super easy. That was the first thing I did too. I replaced the 40 gig with a 160. I download almost every single demo that comes out and I still havent ran out of space yet.

These installs dont bother me too much because it really cuts down on the load times.

You can also delete the GAME data without harming your save data. So when you are finished, delete the 5gigs while keeping your save. If you decide you want to play again, just reinstall and load your save. (This is really only something you would do if you are having space problems.)

I've got a 60giger with a 10GB Linux partition and haven't had problems with space yet. The installs don't bother me much, but perhaps that comes from my old days installing PC games. Long install times, sometimes swapping discs (or floppies!) multiple times. It's always a good chance to acquaint yourself with the manual or go make a sandwich so you're ready for the long haul

1. you either haven't played all that much yet to run into space issues (i'm constantly out of space on my 40GB hard drive, I can't even have all my games I own installed)
2. you haven't played metal gear solid 4 yet, it installs after every chapter it seems.

I borrowed Cod5 from a coworker a few weeks back, and I haven't played it due to the enormous patch I have to sit through. MGS4 I didn't mind too much (aside from the cutscenes) but MGO was a real pain to download and update. Wasn't planning on getting RE5, but I would have just got it on the 360 for Live anyway.

Have to say that even though there is an install, it was really quick despite the fact that it's 5 gigs. Humorously enough, during the load times that it practically eliminates, they have Resident Evil History lessons that go by too quickly to read. Bottom line, if time is the issue it's no big deal.
