Did You Play Overlord?

Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin March 20th, 2009 at 11:13 AM

The Co-Opticrew hungrily awaits the Judgement Day of the Penguin.

Our hub site Colony of Gamers has posted a new trailer for Overlord II, the sequel to the third-person strategy/action game Overlord (duh).

In addition to being able to name your Minions and control them independently for certain mission objectives, Overlord II is reported to have splitscreen co-op -- as well as online -- for two players. There is no word yet if this will spread to the progressive campaign or if it will be another standalone mode with several extended missions.

Despite the watered-down co-op, some old friends of mine at clan site Electric Mayhem really seemed to enjoy Overlord; I never did try it myself. Did you play it? What did you think?

I'm actually really excited for this; hopefully they've added a map to the game so I can enjoy it this time!

I bought Overlord when it first came out. Very fun game that had a great storyline. Gameplay was like Pikmin but with killing in a medieval setting. Plus, it was nice to have a game where you don't get yelled at for making the evil choices.
I was upset when I found out how limited the co-op play was. But, later on, they did release a patch that allowed split-screen in the co-op levels.
This game is totally worth a run through, especially if you have a sense of humor.

I played the demo, and really enjoyed it. Its on my Gamefly list for things to get.

The gameplay/story were both awesome and unique and it was a lot of fun.

Fantastic! The map was my only complaint in the original; it took probably twice as long as it should have to completed the first half of the game with no idea where to find the minions. After that, it was fantastic, and I am really excited for the next one now!

I am playing it now.

Just picked it up on the cheap.

Its lots of fun being evil and the minions are adorable in a sick way

But I have to agree with ShadokatRegn that a map would be really nice.

I got it cheap just after Christmas. It's rare to find a game that combines solid challenges with laugh-out-loud humor. Did I play it? I'm still trying to beat it.

It looks awesome, but the camera angle seems weird. I hope I can change it if I wanted to.

WildCard Zen at 07:32 PM on 3.21.2009
You can pan the camera around you at any angle. The only part that I don't like is you have to hold left bumper or else you'll accidentally send your minions out in what ever direction you try to pan the camera too. That's one of the few aggravations I have with it - with emphasis on "Few."

Does the 360 version not have a map? The PS3 version does. Helps a lot. This is a fun game. I cant wait for the next one if it truely does allow two player co-op through the whole game..

I played the original for a few hours (friend brought it over), and I do have to say that it was mildly entertaining. I was disappointed about the lack of local multiplayer, but now that I know the sequel is set to have split-screen, it is definitely on my radar. Great article! I really love it when you guys specify if games have local co-op or not because you're the only site or publication that ever really seems to do so.

WildCard Zen at 06:54 PM on 3.23.2009
The 360 version does have multiplayer and achievements for it. It's part of a free expansion you can download.

There were actually 3 DLC packs for Overlord. 1 was free and added split-screen play and a new co-op level. 1 was 400 MS points and added some new multiplayer maps and a harder (Legendary) difficulty. The last was 800 MS points and added the Raising Hell content, which was an extension to the single player campaign along with new items.
They PS3 version came with all the new content and was called Overlord: Raising Hell.
I haven't played the expansions yet, are they worth the MS points?
