A Review of Indie Co-op Games

Castle Crashers, Kingdom 2 Crowns, and Overcooked 2

While it’s fun playing in an online casino like GClub to pass the time, it’s equally enjoyable playing co-op games with your friends from your location of choice. Playing cooperative games builds trust and closeness between you and your loved ones, and it’s more relaxed than a casino environment.

These games are available anywhere, but if you’re looking for a unique co-op gameplay experience, there may only be one way to go: indie co-op games.

The Rise of Indie Co-op Games

You may think that there are only a few indie games available, but the industry is growing, and there are thousands already available. Steam’s indie content offerings ballooned to more than 19,000 last year, so whittling down the best indie games may even be challenging.

The huge number of indie titles are driven by the popularity of events, like E3 and PAX, that present low-budget indie games. These events are beneficial for indie developers and game publishers, who collaborate with indie studios to expand their brands. Indie producers have also taken advantage of indie co-op titles to gain traction and adopt a solid niche.

A Review of Indie Co-op Games

Here are three of our favorite Indie releases.

1. Castle Crashers Remastered

Developed by The Behemoth, this game is an upgraded version of the classic released in 2008.

What we love about Castle Crashers Remastered is its comical and straightforward story, tackling a damsel-in-distress theme. The game begins when enemies raid the castle and kidnap four princesses. The goal is to save them as the castle’s knights.

While the story may not be new, the gameplay may lure you into playing Castle Crashers Remastered. The combat system is entirely satisfying. There are also lots of content rolled up in this game package.

There are some minor visual glitches, like enemies not appearing on screen, but it is a pleasing co-op gaming experience overall.

Pros

  • Wide range of characters and weapons

  • Beautiful presentation

  • Wonderful soundtrack

  • Satisfying combat system

Cons

  • Minor Bugs (like visual glitches)

2. Kingdom: 2 Crowns

Developed by Noio and CoatSink, Kingdom Two Crowns is a micro-strategy, kingdom-building game. It’s available on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.

The presentation is quite old-fashioned, which may even deter some hardcore gamers. The graphics are intentionally pixelated to give off the vibe of games from twenty years ago, though.

What we love about it is how clean the pixel graphics and animations appear for the style.

In the game, you play the roles of a realm’s monarch. Your goal is to expand the kingdom and build your defences during the day. At night, you defend your territory from flesh-eating enemies.

The biggest downfall of the game is that it tells you almost nothing. You only learn the mechanics through trial and error, which doesn’t bode well with its mistake-punishment system.

Pros

  • Online and local co-op

  • Challenging

  • Retro art style

  • Polished pixel graphics

Cons

  • Trial-and-error game design

  • Mistake-punishment system

Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2 is a cooking simulation game. Developed by Ghost Town, it follows the same game pattern of the original: cook and serve food under pressure.

The sequel has some notable additions to it that make it an indie co-op game to beat. In this upgraded version, you will also find more content and more levels to play.

Pros

  • Plenty of content (new recipes and kitchens)

  • Challenging co-op action

  • Diverse characters available

Cons

  • Screen can look disorderly
