Terminator: Salvation Montage Confirms Splitscreen Co-Op

Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin April 21st, 2009 at 1:39 AM

Upcoming movie tie-in third-person shooter and action game Terminator: Salvation has been under wraps for a while. Finally, we get to glimpse some more gameplay footage, and near the halfway mark, we are treated to a quick moment of splitscreen co-op.

The above screenshot was taken from the new trailer, and as you can see: two players are working from different angles to take down their targets. Whether this is a campaign mission or not can't be confirmed, although it's a safe bet. We've known about Terminator: Salvation's co-op for some time now, but this is our first eyes-on, and it looks...well...just like it should.

Hopefully, the second player can actually save their progress. Click "Read More" for the new trailer.

What's the point in today's market to release either split screen or online co-op only. They should cater for both markets as a standard, if they are going to cater for one.

P.S. Zonf sucks

Despite the shortcomings of the co-op - the game looks really fun.

Funny how the co-op crowd is split. It would be nice if the developers included both every time, but if time and tech do not allow, then it's interesting to see the different choices made and why.

This sounds really cool, but nowadays "local split-screen only" puts any game right in the "rental" category for me.

*Shakes his fist at Vegas 2 and W@W.

Wait a sec...both of those games have online co-op...

Unless you mean online split-screen...in which case you're asking a bit much. Four-player online co-op is pretty awesome, even without guest support.

Yeah, its online split-screen that I want. I guess I should have said that split-screen co-op gets them closer to insuring my purchase but unless they also add online split-screen in the other modes, then they only get a rental from me at best.

It is interesting to see this. On one hand, they would have gotten a broader audience with online functionality. But I guess they figured teamwork would be best sitting next to each other.

Can anyone confirm any real benefit for THIS game not to have online co-op? Is there some kind of communication that online can't deal with?

MrxKnown_JG, I think it has more to do with the deadline...you know, trying to release it with the movie, etc. I thought I read somewhere that they were interested in patching the game to allow online co-op later...

That's pretty harsh... In that case, you must have only...what, three games?

Well I was kinda talking on a broad scale local versus online. But yeah, movie games have a long history of not enough time. Makes me wonder why they don't get prep-work started earlier and then be there as the movie starts developing.

LOL, I sure don't have as many games as I would like I will tell you that!

If we would have rented Vegas 2, we probably still would have bought it because its got a lot of value and replayabilty with the campaign and T-Hunt but it really chapped my hide when they took out the online split-screen stuff.

That fact didn't really click with me until recently when some friends of mine finally got with the program and got a 360. We tried to play Vegas2 together and then realized they had left out the online part. GRRR! It ticked me off too because we had to play pass the controller that night.

W@W would only have been a rental I am afraid. The campaign was decent I guess, but the zombie mode just screams for online split-screen and there is no excuse for it not being in there.

But there are a fair number of games that have done the split-screen stuff right.
Halo 3
Gears 2
L4D
R6:Vegas. Dunno why they messed up 2.
UT3
America's Army:True Soldiers

Halo 3:ODST (coming soon BOOYA!)

Then there are the few such as the aforementioned Terminator game, Damnation, and the new Lost Planet 2 that are supposed to have split-screen but I'm not sure if it will be online or not. I got my fingers crossed.
