Columnist Vexed over Modern Warfare 2's Night Vision Goggles, We Have Another Idea

Philadelphia Inquirer's columnist Rob Watson is a bit worried over the recently announced Prestige Edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.  Why is he worried?  Well he thinks that while 99.9% of the "kids" that own it will have harmless fun with the NV goggles, it's that .1% that'll ruin it for the rest of the folks.

Yet, it is also like giving away a free race car with Gran Tourismo or Forza - someone is going to cause a highway wreck. In Modern Warfare 2's case, I shudder (just a bit) to think of someone, who may have a hard time with reality anyway, donning these goggles for real mischief or even worse.

Infinity Ward should know better. They are great at fake realism. One of the best. This maybe be crossing that line, however.

I'm not so sure that comparison is accurate though, to be honest.  It's a lot easier to hurt other people with a 2000 pound piece of metal that goes 175MPH than a plastic pair of goggles that let you see in green.

One thing I think that would be really cool - and I'm not even sure if it's technically possible - would be to use the goggles with the game.  The way it would work is there would be special or secret locations in the game that using the night vision goggles would reveal content or engage the player more with the game world.

It's really no different than all the plastic accessories for the Wii-motes, but the NV goggles will give you real world benefits.  Just hopefully not mischievous ones.

first of all, i can't think of anything you could do with nightvision goggles that's so terribly damaging that wouldn't require access to other questionable equipment. and the kids who would do something damaging would most likely do something damaging with or without nightvision goggles. its like saying you can't give your kids a jack knife because they could potentially do something wrong with it. besides, the game is rated M so parents should be influencing any purchasing done by minors. they probably don't even work that well anyway.

Ok, the game is for 17 to begin with. And also, who's going to get night-vision goggles and say "Finally! I can rape and pillage the town!" If they needed night-vision goggles to do that, they wouldn't wait for CoDMW2.

When they announced this I said to my friends I wonder what kind of things a small group of kids will end up using these for. I know youtube will be involved and I can't wait.

Kinda like mentos and pepsi bottles shot off the mountain side, potato guns, or maybe a howtocast on stalking your ex on a budget. Joking of course but Im sure someone will find a practical use like that guy with the wii remotes.

if you post a comment from the article it seems to filter out a lot of symbols. posting from the forum topic tends to work better. except you're posting from COG network so i'm not sure if you can w/o registering here.

you have to wonder what kind of quality the NVGs will be, will they be any good at all?

From what I've heard, quality night vision goggles cost $400 minimum. These cost less than $80. So I don't think so. They'd be taking a huge loss if they were decent.

I'm no expert, but I believe that these goggles are limited to the range/scope of the LEDs.

I never talk when I play online on COD. No one really says anything worth listening to, or no one talks whatsoever.
