Halo Franchise Expands: Waypoint, Legends Coming This Fall

Dare we say he's even cooler in cartoon form?

More news coming for co-op fans straight out of Comic-con.  This time it's regarding some upcoming additions to the lofty Halo franchise.  First up is Halo Waypoint.  Described as the "a new destination for "Halo" fans on Xbox LIVE", it sounds like a channel devoted to Halo news, trailers, screenshots, and the like.  A career system with ranking based on both in and out of game goals should keep Halo fans busy.

Another announcement is Halo Legends, a series of animated shorts set in the Halo universe.  Some of the most acclaimed anime producers will be involved in the series.  You can check out a preview of Halo Legends on XBox Live today.  Of course, the series will be made available via Halo Waypoint.

This causes me a great moral dilemma.  My youngest son loves "Master Halo" (as you may already know), and seeing him in cartoon form would likely blow his mind.  Is there any chance the Halo anime will be remotely kid friendly?  I suppose I better hold off telling him about it until we know for sure.  Parenting: it's tougher than mowing down aliens in a Warthog.

I would imagine they'll try to keep the violence/language in line with the games. On the other hand, those guys can do some pretty bloody violence when they choose too.

who? bungie? i doubt they have much involvement in this to be honest. M$ owns the IP and bungie is more of a reference for new halo material. of course M$ still hit them up for the new games.

Team 343 or something is now handling the Halo games. I think Bungie is finally making something other than Halo now.

smurphster at 09:05 AM on 7.24.2009

they are finishing up halo 3 ODST (9/22), they're working on halo reach, plus some other projects that they won't talk about (most likely just DLC for halo 3, ODST, & reach). there may be a non-halo project going on but they like to keep secrets

Bungie's doing reach? Or 343? Because it would be pointless for them to separate from Microsoft just so they can continue to do the exact same things they were doing before.

bungie is doing reach... why would they? $$$$$. i'm sure they'll have a new IP soon. they've hinted about it but it will probably be 2-3 years before we get our hands on it.

who is this team 343 you speak of? did a google search and got nothing substantial and nothing about games.

Maybe I got the number wrong. I'll check Kotaku and edit this post when I find it.
EDIT: What the heck, where did that article go?

EDIT AGAIN: Found it!

cool... i remember when frankie left they said he was going to microsoft to oversee everything halo but they didn't have a name for his division at that point. it sounds like 343 will just manage the IP and hand out games to studios like bungie, ensemble, robot entertainment etc. so 343 is probably the producer/publisher of halo reach while bungie is the developer. M$ is going to milk the halo franchise for years/decades but i bet bungie will be working on new non-halo games too.

Maybe they'll go back to making Mac games so I can play games on my laptop besides Starcraft.

dual boot or VM?

HobocidalManiac at 10:00 AM on 7.24.2009
Dual boot via Boot Camp. I've been considering using a VM. I have 4GB of RAM so it would run smoothly.

as long as you can run windows or linux natively, i guess you're forgiven

so yeah... go halo legends! can't wait

i like the sound of halo waypoint too. it would be nice to be able to pick and choose what channels you want to see. kind of like subscribing to sites with an rss reader. that would make the current dashboard much more useful

Slightly off topic: I'm actually really excited for Halo: ODST. I've been watching some videos and it looks like an awesome co-op game. And you're playing as the Master Chief with tons of health and super jumps. Good job Bungie!

smurphster at 10:13 AM on 7.24.2009

confused... master chief is not in ODST. you play as an ODST, hence the name

HobocidalManiac at 10:14 AM on 7.24.2009

Sorry, a typo. I meant you're NOT MC. I've always wanted to play as an ODST since Halo 2.
