Get Hardcore with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

"Call of Flashpoint: Dragon Warfare Rising"...? Yep, I'm trademarking it.

Codemasters has released a 3.5-minute video showcasing a lot of on-foot gameplay from their upcoming title Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Despite being hailed initially as a spin-off or "copy" of Bohemia Interactive's ArmA II, Dragon Rising looks to have plenty of breathing room, thanks in part to our disappointment with ArmA II's co-op, and thanks again to today's video, which we've embedded for your convenience.

The video simply reeks of Call of Duty-style controls and gameplay, going so far as to blatantly lift the Hardcore Mode from the series which made it famous. This is going to excite some folks and turn others off, but one thing's for sure: if Codemasters can pull it off, a Modern Warfare clone with realistic physics tweaks, tanks, helicopters, and a 278 square kilometer island could be a real treat. A single-player campaign that fully supports four players in drop-in/drop-out fashion -- a la Golden Billy winner Left 4 Dead -- makes this impressive video so much more exciting.

This one looks great. Been wary of tactical shooters since hear Nick's impressions of ArmA II, but I think Flashpoint looks like it straddles the accessibility line a lot better.

"Accessibility" - that's a good word to describe the fine line that a game must not cross lest it leave the realm of entertainment.

One thing that Modern Warfare did right was to clearly separate the more arcadey style of multiplayer from the Hardcore mode, and therefore appeal to many more gamers than even Call of Duty 2 did. Seems like Codemasters did their research.

To be fair, Operation Flashpoint was hardcore way before Call of Duty.

That is true. Still, the comparison exists.

How hardcore is walking into a room with your back to someone killing the another guy and still having time to turn around and shoot the other guy?

Not that I care as I will no doubt pick this up but probably a bad bit to show.
Wonder how the threat indicator would work in hardcore mode. I mean how many people have surround sound setup to hear directional sound? I like the OGR setup, not too detail but at least you had direction of fire like you would hear.
