This Guy Explains Co-Op Gaming, And Swears A Lot While Doing it

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo August 16th, 2009 at 8:16 AM

Look, we love co-op gaming as much as the next guy.  But I'm not quite sure we love co-op gaming as much as THIS guy.  He goes by the name of the GamingGoose - and he's pissed off at developers, publishers and just about anyone that gets in his way.  Why?  Because he can't figure out what games have co-op and what games don't.  He's pissed that games that say they have co-op don't really have a cooperative mode at all but rather a "2 player simultaneous mode."

Despite the use of some fowl language (see what I did there?), Mr Goose makes some truly excellent points.  Many of the reasons he's angry are the reasons we've created Co-Optimus.com.  It's incredibly difficult to discover exactly what the co-op mode of a game is before it's released, and even though we've made great strides to uncovering a lot of information - we're a long way from where I'd like us to be.

So give the video a watch and see what you think.  The shtick seems to be a Lewis Black meets gaming geek style of comedy and it's a fairly entertaining and informative watch.

I couldn't watch the whole thing. It does the same thing as blacksite. Rated for adults, but bleeps out the swears. So annoiying.

Xbox has wether a game is coop on the box. Deaf people have been asking for some sort of subtitle marking on the boxes for a while now, and not got.

he's a bit rubbish at pretending to be angry to be honest. but he has a point (maybe even two points!). shame it took 8 minutes to make it.

He is correct in most of the things...
But still Co-operative can even mean that you play CTF where your partner is clearing the way for you, since you must co-operate, stay together interact and react to make it work ...
...so well, it would make scene to Classify the type of Co-operating instead of saying it's not Co-op while it still has co-operative elements.
You do pretty well with your site, I like the Classification system you have

The problem this guys is dealing with is simple:
He is used to classic co-op story mode games with passion and originality.

What we see today in most Co-op titles is a team-game with Co-operative elements.
Such titles are developed fast, which means they are cheap in production and they make fun.
Most today players are used to click automatically on Multi-player in the main-menu, they don't know that playing a story can be even more exciting as watching a good film.

A good story-mode Co-op game is expensive and complex, you need to settle down concentrate listen and watch what happens...
Many Players can't follow the story, they want to listen to the funky weapon sounds and cool voices screaming only and in addition they need to feed their ego by proofing that they have skill.
A classic co-op gamer does not have the intention to rank first, he is concerned that everyone does enjoy the excellent Co-operation.
Many games and mods leak in Co-op force elements, which force you to co-operate, too not fail the mission. Simple reason is that many players are getting frustrated quickly and Gaming takes concentration and Motivation. Computers can make one quit the current task pretty fast if they don't work as expected, it is the same with games. People need motivation to continue on hard tasks unless they have a warrior or explorer personality, which most of the games don't have.

A perfect example how much frequently occurring success can motivate people is World of Warcraft!
I don't want to know how much money players spend on this game, the News talking about KillerGames and they seam not to care that there is a entire new generation of endorphins Zombies growing up which don't care to have a opinion or to stand-up for something like rights...

You think ego-shooter players are aggressive and offensive.
Well yes most are indeed but once the virtual enemy is down they return to their normal state as normal civilians and the don't hide or isolate them self from the outer world, to life in a illusion with lots of endorphins to fix some complexes.

I'm not saying that all people are like that but unfortunately the main-stream has exactly the mentioned profiles, that's why I decided to go for Co-op Gaming I want to explore and to be entertained, help others to explore and to enjoy good company

Games such as Left 4 Death offers these elements and, they sell well.
In my opinion Left 4 death is nothing more than a HL2-Mod with new sounds darker textures, a incredible bad story, lots of lag and strange weapons, oh almost forgott about that and it has some changes done on the player-models. BUT it doesn't feel like a a real game to me, what doesn't mean it does not offer some sort of fun when you like to Hide be Hunt or to Hunt-down.

Attention is the key
This guy his intentions clearly where to draw much attention.
And he succeeded, his acting was good, his plot was planned well until he started to repeat.
He delivered what today community wants, he'll do better next time

Well, I guess, this are my thoughts about co-op so far...

That is one angry co-op nerd. I just like playing with my friends - pretty straightforward, and I didn't have to use fowl language to say it.

Sure, it'd be nice if "co-op" is defined a little better, but it's all the same to me most of the time. I don't mind comp stomp RTS, I don't mind modes (though it's nicer to get a story with it) - but really, gaming together is FUN. Period.

Nick, did you happen to tweet back to him and let him know about the goodness that is Co-Optimus?

roland at 10:27 AM on 8.16.2009
You know what, screw this guy. I just checked his Twitter feed and the YouTube comments, and he did know about Co-Optimus and used its existences to back up his argument.

"I know about it. Followed them on Twitter till they spammed me with "update tweets" every five minutes. The fact that this site needs to even exist proves my point. I dont want to do research, I want? the company to tell me."

So you're going to call out a bunch of video game sites for not giving you the information you want, but then dismiss the one site that actually does do that? I know that was meant to be an entertaining rant, but it's bs to pretend that this information isn't available from anywhere when you know darn good and well that it is. If you're going to rant about the accuracy of information, you must be accurate yourself.

I did Roland. Haven't heard a response though.

Mrxknown_JG at 11:52 AM on 8.16.2009

Oh my god, there's so much to respond to in your post I have no idea where to begin. I don't disagree with you or anything, but some of your sentences makes it hard to read.

Anyway, is that all the co-op games you have listed in your MyGames section?

This guy is a little over the top, however he makes a few good points, like said in the Co-Optimus article. I too would like to see them mention what kind of co-op is featured in the game on the back of the case. Take GRAW2 for example. I bought it, thinking that I could play 4-player co-op storymode with my friends. However, it was only available in a different mode. Yet the case said "co-op" when really, it should have said multiplayer.

All they need to do is put a bit more detail into the back of the cases in my opinion.

1. Yes, I try to state my self clearly, often ppl quote what you write and twist the meaning. They don't mean to harm you but they understand things different and so it occurs that many words help to understand each other better
2. Forgive me I'm not a native English speaker
3. I have the following games of which I belive they have co-op Mode/Modifications, I have not come to find and add them all here:
Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter (Never played it)
Crysis (I was soooooooooooo much disappointed in the Multi-Player (network/smoothness))
Splinter Cell Special Edition + Mission Pack (Never played it)
Unreal Tournament 3 (Loved It but my GFX Card is to weak to play lots of Deathmatch with a decent grafic)
Unreal Anthology: Unreal II, Unreal, Unreal Tournament 2004
Star Trek: Elite Force II with HaZardModding Coop Script Mod
Doom3 with Last Man Standing Co-op (LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG)

sansavail at 04:12 AM on 8.17.2009
The angry guy has a point. You can't conclude any info about co-op from the game covers. This site has been a blessing, though, even on this site the co-op specs are needlessly complicated. "Playable Online with Splitscreen" doesn't tell if LAN/system link has splitscreen...

Should be for example
Local 2 ppl, on split(OR same)screen
System-link 4 ppl, 2 per console
Live 4 ppl, 1 per console

..and mentions about game modes & execptions (like horde in GoW or firefight in ODST)

thegaminggoose at 04:41 PM on 8.19.2009
Yeah, this guy sucks.

I didn't even know this was here, until I saw the embed on my video stats. Most people who responded will not see this. And, yes, I did unfollow Coop on twitter due to the many site updates when a new article was here. I didn't follow cooptimus for that. Other people pointed out this site in my comments. I really wasn't thinking about this site when I ranted about the companies. This was directed at websites specifically, not websites even though I mentioned the larger ones.

Chrissstrahl at 11:44 PM on 8.19.2009

If we have been listening carefully to your video, we should have noticed that, I don't think anyone would think that the video sucks, it contains truth and has some entertainment value and the info you can gather on Co-optimismus is almost as you asked it to be.
By the way welcome to Co-optimismus

thegaminggoose at 08:14 AM on 8.20.2009
@Chrissstrahl Yes, I know, but I always say that I suck.

It is true that there is information on Cooptimus. And, I will make sure people know that if I can in some way. But unfortuntely, Cooptimus is not on the back of the game box.
