Co-Optimus Staffers On The Lost Planet 2 Demo

Marc "DjinniMan" Allie August 20th, 2009 at 10:13 PM

That's not the right giant monster, but it'll do.

The Lost Planet 2 demo went up yesterday, and most of the Co-Optimus staff rushed home to play it as soon as possible.  Our impressions of the demo range from giddiness (me) to grumpiness (Mike) and everything in between.  We're interested to know: what are your thoughts on the demo?  Did it sell you a copy of the game?  Or save you $60?

Jim:

The demo was hectic and didn't improve the series controls, which are splashy but serviceable. The precision aiming zoom cannot be re-mapped; that's frustrating. Overall, though, I had fun with it. I'm looking forward to a good mix of close-quarters firefights and epic creature battles.

Nick:

I thought the demo still felt like Lost Planet, but might have been a poor representation of the sequel.  That being said it's obvious to see how much depth co-op is going to add to the game, and I really like how "fresh" the gameplay is compared to the other first and third person shooters out there.

Mike:

The demo didn't do anything for me- the controls felt too loose, you could suddenly drown yourself, and despite there being tutorial screens strewn throughout the demo area, it's sort of difficult to get a grasp of the mechanics without frustration.  As I've said elsewhere, it feels like what I would imagine a shooter version of Monster Hunter would play like, and not in a good way.

Kat:

The co-op aspect of the game was enjoyable, especially the 3-player drivable mech. Though, the controls were a little wonky, the menu wasn't the easiest to maneuver, and the dark screen made things hard to distinguish from one-another. I played through with 3 other co-optimus members, and we finished the demo, but not before a lot of "are we actually doing any damage to that thing?"

Marc:

I played through only a little bit of the PC version on Lost Planet, but this demo was far more impressive to me.  The monster is epic, and going inside him was suitably icky.  The demo sold me on the game!

From the little I played of Lost Planet 1, this seemed to me to be roughly the same. Altho, the demo showed me how co-op plays it's role in the game. Looks to be an interesting title.

yea, its a good idea to have 3 other players with you if you plan on buying this. Its just more fun!

I and my 2 friends like the demo. I will most likely buy the game.

If there will be no System Link option, then I'm not getting this for X360...

Perhaps because I have completed the first game and am able to handle the controls, but I thought the demo was excellent. There are not many games out there that provide this sort of co-op team work. Potentially the set pieces could be immense - Shadow of the Collosos in 4 player!

I thoroughly enjoyed it - more of the same solid 4 player co-op and other little additions = awesome.

i see where you guys complain at the control are pretty intense but they are not that hard there are some button combination that do simple task but with all these option giving you an edge against your ur up against though they never mention tht holding down b will allow u to sprint like crazy comes in hand. and i hear some people complain even about the smallest thing like the water lmao come on give me a break in the begging of the demo it basically say game under construction still. i like the controls they are not to complicated they are petty much for a novice player of LP1 but even if your a beginner it shouldn't take to long to pick up on the controls. the monster was cool the inside and hit em where it hurt aspect rocks the new VS's are amazing its always cool to have buddies and the gun sword oh snap don't get me started tht is my favorite weapon the demo for me SOLD ME A GAME oh and capcom if u see this a split screen co-op offline and online will set ur ratings threw the roof just to let u know

Regarding the water I went through the creature, got "shat" out, and it dropped me in a bottomless pit of water that I couldn't swim in, causing instant death.

Regarding your grasp on the English language Either you're William God-damn Faulker, or you need to learn about "Mr. Period."

I did find the water a little bit cheap - why can't we swim!?

smurphster at 05:15 AM on 8.21.2009

too much gear?

merono133 at 05:28 AM on 8.21.2009
major run sentence lmao sorry.
but yeah exactly smurphster your exactly right. they carry guns, grenades, t-eng tank, ammo, and they have they armor, you try and swim with that, not gonna happen lmao

I've told the snow pirates, on several occassions, to make sure they carry their inflatable jacket. They all complain about the amount of stuff they have to slog around, but you never know what's going to happen!

merono133 at 05:31 AM on 8.21.2009
oh i have question 4 you guys, anyone find a weapon in the demo the like in particular. i think 4 me it was the gun sword being on top of that thing and hacking away at it is a lot of fun.

pheriannath at 05:37 AM on 8.21.2009
It's understandable that you can't swim in that gear. Why they bothered to include an instant death pit is another matter.

merono133 at 05:47 AM on 8.21.2009
well i would have to go by previous games made by capcom. the monster does in monster hunter freedom don't spawn, they are already there as soon as you start they game. so to give the illusion of the monster surfacing there a big whole for the monster spawn at and emerge

I think I was sold when they said 4 player coop. I in fact thought the demo was quite short. While I did enjoy it, and had some fun. I also sadly got 3 red rings after playing it, maybe it was the demo!

merono133 at 05:55 AM on 8.21.2009
oooo sorry bigtex that sucks. yeah i think the demo could have been longer. the boss is way to easy if you have player who know what they are doing, you just attack the core on the outside till it drops all the way in, then take out the legs. then go inside hit the core inside get shot out and finish the job outside, easy as pie

Zonf86 at 05:59 AM on 8.21.2009

New challenge: beat the salamander using only melee.

merono133 at 06:02 AM on 8.21.2009
that would be amazing if someone did that but extremely hard also you would do much to it inside so yeah have fun with that guys lol

txshurricane at 06:09 AM on 8.21.2009

You don't have to take out the legs, even. Just get scooped up in its mouth, or use your grapple to get in.

merono133 at 06:15 AM on 8.21.2009
thats true, but the legs are weak points so the do a decent amount of damage to the creature when you attack them

bigDinyomouth at 02:03 PM on 8.21.2009
I dont understand how you get into its mouth. I have tried several times with the grappling hook when the creatures mouth is open but with no luck.
