Left 4 Dead 2's Melee Weapons Revealed

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo September 10th, 2009 at 8:43 AM

It's been known for sometime that Left 4 Dead 2's biggest and baddest new feature will be the inclusion of melee weapons.  We've heard numbers tossed around as to just how many - but now we know for sure and now we know exactly what.  Joystiq managed to scoop it from Valve during this year's PAX 2009 and we'll be seeing 10 weapons in total.

Here's the list:

  • Baseball Bat
  • Cricket Bat
  • Crowbar
  • Electric Guitar
  • Fire Axe
  • Frying Pan
  • Katana
  • Machete
  • Tonfa (police baton)
  • Chainsaw

As you may have read from our hands on preview - we liked the Katana and the Guitar very much.  I have visions have a full band of guitar wielding survivors smashing the heads off the zombie horde.

For some reason I expected more than 10 melee weapons even though I shouldn't have. It's probably because of the millions of guns in Borderlands...

Anyways, I love the addition of melee weapons. Does anyone know if they break? Or will they last forever so you can hang on to them as a last resort?

Dynamic melee weapons ftw a giant pencil with wings/baby arms.

i find it hard to believe that a guitar would hold up very long. of course every weapon comes with a flashlight in this game so who knows.

A guitar with a flashlight? Now that's pretty cool!

I think you're meant to play the guitar, and depending on how good you are, the infected will gather around you and sit down to watch.

It is at this point that your team mates start a mosh pit, and kick the crap out of them.

Damn, why I'm not employed by valve I don't know...

Can you heat up the frying pan like in Dead Rising?

At this point, I almost don't want to know anymore about L4D2. I know they are trying to share enough so that everyone knows this is worth getting, but I think they're killing some of the fun of the first playthrough by revealing all the melee weapons, all (or most) of the new enemies, etc.

How cool would it have been to find an electric guitar and immediately smash it into a clown zombie, not knowing that either of those existed in the game?

So true...

So, how do the Melee weapons affect your inventory? Do you have to choose between it and a gun? does it replace your standard push back? Are you able to hold more than two guns and one explosive in this game?

Funny thing is - I went back and played some L4D 1 last night. It was only then I truly realized how different 2 feels. I mean, I knew it was an upgrade, but I never realized how much.

The Melee weapon takes up a weapon slot - which you have two of.

So in the first one, you always have hand guns with unlimited ammo, and you can grab a second weapon of your choice, but you can not replace your hand guns. Do you still have the unlimited ammo hand guns? I guess that would make three weapons? or is it more like, you just have two and you have to choose what is in both slots?

For some reason, I love axes. I think that is a sweet weapon to use in hacking up zombie corpses.

As far as screenshots show. Melee weapons are in addition to your inventory. So you still can hold (dual or single) pistol(s), an actual firearm (m16,ak47,tactical shotgun, pump shotgun,mini-Uzi, etc.) As well as pipe bombs/Molotov cocktail, med-kit, flashlight, and pain pills. There is also in addition to all of this incendiary ammo. Which is in short supply and runs out when you use it all.

Pistols will always be infinite ammo in case you are incapacitated. And melee weapons hurt allies, well at-least the sharp ones to my knowledge.
That is everything that comes to mind at the moment
