Fairly simple port forwarding setups can quickly resolve any and all router issues you may have w/ steam.
I'm behind my own router + whatever router the campus has...and I rock my games on steam w/ no problems.
Nope! not for me, I've browsed the internet for days and my router (DGL-4500 Xtreme Gaming Router) even has options specifically for Steam games, and my brother has the exact same router. (we got them on sale on tigerdirect) So with identical setups we still arent able to connect. DMZ, firewall on pc and router off, antivirus off, steam ports forward via automatic settings AND manually entered settings, nothing works for me connecting to him. It all just keeps saying in console "No heartbeat, no authentication" when we create a server, but we can connect to other servers just fine and play together. But we cannot connect to each other, and it sucks that "sv_lan 0" console command doesnt work anymore. Any ideas would be appreciated as I've really wanted to play steam for awhile now.
if you're stuck with that router, have you tried turning the steam functions off (if possible)? have you upgraded the firmware?
Thanks,
Firmware is up to date, and Steam is the only thing I've had problems with after getting this router. I've had several of those routers you by at retail stores, belkin g,n,n+ ...netgears, those ol-reliable blue wrt45g's (or something similar) and I've always had issues with networking games. So I dont think I've wasted my money.
How do I turn off the steam functions? Through steam?
or creating your own lobby and making the game temp host on your PC?
If you are trying to plan a lan game (across the internet) hamachi is always available
edit: Ok just tried it, both firewalls off, wired connection via same router on both systems. Ports enabled in router exceptions.
counter strike source > create server with password. Trying to join via friends list it always says "Server not responding" on other parties computer. Also doesn't list server under friends tab in find servers window in game. We're pretty much default steam settings on both computers since we rebuilt a few months back. Is there something I'm missing?
Disable NAT.
Won't that make it so I can't use anything else online at the sametime though? I have 3 consoles, 2 DS'es, a PSP, a PC and a laptop that all connect. (not at the sametime have you, but sometimes 2 or 3 together)
I don't think so.. like... I have few PCs and sometimes iPod connected with my router... I'm not exactly sure what you mean.. but.. you can use multiple devices even without NAT.
