Episode One of Fable II is Available for Free on Live

Fable II was one of those games that I anticipated for its co-op and was severely let down...so I determined that I would wait for a good deal and buy it for its single-player gameplay.

Not only has that time come, it has come in the form of five easily digestible episodes, and the first episode is available...for freeeee! Xbox Live members can get their hands on this ~1.8 GB download right now. As in, this second. I wouldn't blame you one bit if you queued it up from work. I did.

Enter the World of “Fable II” One Episode at a Time, First One on the House

“Fable II: Game Episodes” debuts today with the first chapter available for free on Xbox LIVE

Any “Fable II” fan can share experiences of their life in the rich world of Albion, and wild stories about glory or mischief they’ve gotten into as consequences of their choices in the game. For everyone missing out, Microsoft now presents a completely new way to experience “Fable II” through the power of Xbox LIVE and Games on Demand: “Fable II: Game Episodes.”

Debuting today on Xbox LIVE*, “Fable II: Game Episodes” gives players the choice to purchase and download “Fable II” one episode at a time. This marks the first time in Xbox history that a major blockbuster title will be distributed not only digitally, but episodically as well. “Fable II: Game Episodes” delivers the entire “Fable II” experience in five consecutive installments, with all the Achievements, challenges and excitement of the disc-based game, as well as full compatibility with the previously released Game Add-ons, “Knothole Island” and “See the Future.”

As an incentive for those curious about the adventures that await them in “Fable II,” Microsoft Game Studios is making the first episode free to download. In this initial episode, players are introduced to the vibrant world of Albion where every choice has a consequence, and are able to experience childhood and the trials of being a young adult. Players can then choose to purchase additional episodes on Xbox LIVE at their own pace.

Players who decide to purchase “Fable II” either digitally or on disc after a foray into the first game episode will find their saved progress, character profile, and items from the first episode will be transferred seamlessly as they continue their journey.  All editions of the game offer cooperative play with friends on the same couch as well as on Xbox LIVE.**

* Fable II: Games on Demand is available in LIVE enabled regions around the world excluding Japan and Korea

** Xbox LIVE Gold membership required for online multiplayer.

You just can't argue with a free game.

That is pretty cool.

You said free. I like you. I also like Fable. Fable free = good times.

so only the first episode is free? don't we call those demos?

If so, that's a pretty daunting demo. 2 1/2 hrs, saved progress, co-op, Achievements...

You might check on the Achievements thing, seems like I've read somewhere that you won't actually get achievements from the first episode unless you've purchased the second episode. [EDIT"> I looked, it was a commenter on a Joystiq story saying that they had downloaded and played episode one and that it prompted them to buy episode 2 whenever they unlocked an achievement (and they didn't get the achievement).

yeah M$ has a big problem with free content giving out achievements. that's just lame.

Thanks for the correction.

Of course, the fact that you get this for free offsets any possible gripes. Keep in mind that if buying Episode 2 unlocks your Episode 1 Achievements, then you've basically gotten two full episodes for the price of one.

I'm not complaining about it, just pointing it out. Seems fair to hold off on Achievements for a free episode.

Now, what might be complaint worthy is the cost. I've seen a couple of different numbers thrown out by people who say they've played it now, and it's either 800 points and/or 1150 points per additional episode. I don't know if those are from different regions, or the cost for different episodes (2 vs 3) or what. But if those are accurate, this is going to end up running $40-$55, which seems absurd when you can walk into your local game store and pick it up for $30 brand new, and even worse, Gamestop has a listing for a Platinum version coming out in October that seems to include Knothole Island, also priced at $30.

Interestingly, I couldn't find pricing on the Live Marketplace for the other episodes.

I agree that the episode pricing had better be competitive, but considering that the game is available on Games on Demand -- which caps at $30 -- I'm sure the episodes will be reasonable.

Also: if you play Episode 1 and decide to get the game at a retailer instead, the game save and Achievements transfer over just like they would if you were to continue episodically.

The DLC is free now, which could possibly help explain the price. They just decided to include it into the price for late adopters.

I'm confused. Is this an expansion to Fable 2? or is this just the beginning of the standard game?

roland at 01:46 PM on 9.30.2009

It's just the standard game, split up.

Ah! Thanks!

I guess I can delete this beast off my HDD then since I own the disk.

I never talk when I play online on COD. No one really says anything worth listening to, or no one talks whatsoever.
Part of me wants to crop the second picture you took, and add text. Something simple, like "Oh geez. . ." It's got the perfect f
BORDERLANDS! Hopefully finish my first playthrough! I'm on "The Final Piece" but I'll probably do side quests as well.
Did they make a remake on Gameboy Advance or something? I remember the name.
