Possible Survival Mode in Borderlands?

Marc "DjinniMan" Allie October 1st, 2009 at 9:42 AM

It seems Borderlands is including a co-op survival mode of sorts.  These game modes (like Gears 2's Horde and Halo 3 ODST's Firefight) allow players to team up against waves of enemies, to see how long they can last.  This snippet from IGN's Borderlands preview seems to indicate there'll be something similar in Borderlands.

I even wound up discovering a fighting arena in one part of Pandora, where I was challenged to survive waves of enemies in an enclosed space and given a reward at the end, though it proved far too difficult for my level and gear.

Yup, that sounds like a survival mode to us!  As the release date for Borderlands approaches, many hands on previews are showing up.  Here are some particularly juicy bits we found interesting.

Kotaku:

What keeps me intrigued, makes me want to come back again and again are all of those weapons. Those glorious weapons. There are, by some accounts, more than 3 million variations of weapons in the games. And some do some pretty amazing things. All of them have great, randomly generated names like my machine gun "Bone Shredder", my electrified-bullet shooting sniper rifle "LB20 Static Wrath" and my brutal six shooter "MAL31-B Blast Law".

Gaming Nexus:

I know that Modern Warfare 2 is the top game on everyone's mind for the rest of the year but Borderlands is shaping up to be as good as what Infinity Ward is creating if not a better change of pace. The game isn't perfect but you won't notice the few flaws the game has because you're having so much fun playing the game. I was late to work on at least three separate occasions because of "Just one more mission" syndrome and I have a feeling I'm going to be losing hours and hours of my life when the game ships in October.

Ars Technica:

Playing with other people added quite the tactical punch to the game, and allowed you to explore your special abilities and take on missions together. Again, this is very much like a first-person Diablo; if you have a tight group of gaming friends, you may have found your next addiction.

MTV Multiplayer's interview with Gearbox:

"We do have a single player plus, I guess you'd call it. The level cap is 50, but you beat the game around 31 or 35, somewhere around there. Then you can restart the game and do New Game Plus where everything's 35 to 50 on the second play-through."

A big thanks goes out to Co-Optimus user Mrxknown_JG, who provided us this tip

i saw something about that in a different article too. it sounds like its one of those missions that you can replay whenever you want really. i wouldn't call it a mode but definitely a mission (or several missions?) i'd love to play several times.

I'm actually more thrilled at the New Game+. I'm never any good at Survival modes, though that could be in part that they bore me kind of quickly. . . Just hoping there's a difficulty to restart at level 50 that's a challenge throughout the game. Would be a bit of a downer to hit level 50, beat the game and then. . . Just grind or start a new character, though I'm used to doing that in other games, so it's not too big a deal to me. An "epic difficulty" of sorts would be neat, in my opinion.

Yep, there will be an Arena that you could set up customly (dunno what they meant by that, maybe you can choose your enemies or whatever).

Okay so this game will have Split Screen, right? The developers were on XPlay and basically said they have split screen...I think.

If it does it's a definite buy for me.

It does, in fact there are videos around of split-screen gameplay.

But i still dont know if it is possible to play split-screen and go online with other two players at the same time

I've been waiting for an official confirmation of SS with online, but the lack of any confirmation for so long I think confirms it's not possible.

everything we already knew about Borderlands and now a Survival mode? unbelievable, Gearbox deserves mad props for all this awesomeness, i hope the game sells really well and makes other Devs wake up

@Mercyful/bapenguin Gearbox mentioned a while ago that Splitscreen and Online will be mutually exclusive due to technical issues. They do, however, plan to patch it soon after release (or possibly even on release day) to allow Splitscreen Online play.

@mook Gearbox created some Half-Life expansions, the Brothers in Arms series, and ported Halo to PC. That pedigree alone makes this run-of-the-mill for them. They've deserved mad props ever since Borderlands was announced!

New Game = WIN!

Going to be a solid game, can't wait to pick it up in what 18 days?

I wonder if players will be rewarded with good loot if they clear certain amount of waves. It would be make sense given the type of game Borderlands is.

I really hope this game is a commercial success. After Brothers in Arms' low sales, I think Gearbox can rebound with Borderlands.

Thanks ong_elvin, good to hear that we'll get SS Online down the road. My girlfriend and I will have a good time with this game.
