Halo 3: ODST Sells 2.5 Million, Halo 3 Sequel Hinted, Reach Details, and More Halo!

Halo 3: ODST has sold over 2.5 million copies in its two weeks on store shelves, no doubt fueled by the Halo name and the friendly co-op modes the game supports.

Included with the game is access to the Halo Reach beta, a multiplayer beta that kicks off sometime next year.  But what exactly IS Halo Reach?  343 Industries and ex-Bungie man Frank O'Connor explains.

A first-person shooter with an additional multiplayer mode, Halo: Reach "is a chronological prequel but it is not a prequel in the directions the Star Wars prequels were to the (original) movies," says O'Connor, a co-writer on 2007's Halo 3. says. "It will cover events in and around the planet Reach," where the invading Covenant first attacked humankind in the Halo story line.

But that's not all the Halo we'll be seeing, in fact, there's a six year plan currently for Halo comics, anime, books, toys and games.

But what about the Master Chief?  The game's iconic main character.  Will we ever see Spartan 117 again?  It certainly sounds like there's some sort of sequel planned, or in the works to wrap up the super secret ending of Halo 3.

As for Master Chief, odds are he will be seen again. "I think that (his) fate, Cortana's fate and the identity of that giant, dark planet at the ending (on the game's hardest skill level) — that's a spoiler — are probably big mysteries that would be irritating if they were just cliffhangers," O'Connor says.

But the cliffhanger may not necessarily be tied together with a game.  With 6 years of content planned in various medium, it may be revealed in the Halo movie(s).

"We're being very careful to pick the right time and the right partner," O'Connor says,  "Eventually, it will become very apparent that there is a plan for the way the canon all ties together and the way the comic books and the novels all tie together."

Sounds exciting. And I'm guessing Reach will support 4 player co-op as well?

wow... could you tease me any more?

Hey - I'm just as much of a Halo fanboy as you. The drooled all over my keyboard as I wrote this article.

i hope it wasn't your alienware laptop! don't drool on that pretty little thing.

i can't wait to at least hear about all the different modes reach will have. obviously campaign & co-op campaign is a must. i hope there's an improved firefight mode, and i'm not sure about MP. i'd welcome a new twist on halo MP but if they don't introduce enough new stuff, it will just feel like halo 3.1. a class system in MP would be sweet.

Sounds great! Halo is overrated, in my opinion, but it's so accessible. Anyone can get into it without being a fanboy. Plus, we can always expect good co-op.

I know alot of people overrate it and say oh man this is the best game ever, but how I look at it is Halo is a solid shooter that has decent co-op.

Other than that though I dont get excited for the Halo series.

it is overrated by many, underrated by others. i just like it because its one of the only games that my wife sticks to. i can get her to play just about any shooter but once we're done w/ the campaign, she doesn't want to play it unless my brothers are playing. i don't mind, halo is pretty engaging and fun. i could do w/o the 12 year olds though.

plus there aren't many couch co-op games. if CoD4 was split screen, we'd probably play that too.

I'm not sure I can get into another Halo FPS. I love the series, but I already have 3.5 games that will give me the same gameplay, and I'll get a more in-depth story out of a 6 dollar book.

Now, if they make an FPS about the grunt rebellion, that's another story entirely.

idk why everyone knocks the halo stories... they're no worse than CoD, or GoW games.

if you want a deep story, books are always going to be much better. if you want to interact, fire up a game. show me a game that has a deeper story than a novel... they don't exist, so i don't see your point.

I don't know Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger both had killer stories.

smurphster at 06:52 AM on 10.9.2009

those two are exceptional but more depth than a novel? i don't think so

i guess what i'm saying is halo gets crap for a weak story but i don't think they're any worse than the average AAA game. probably better than average. plus reach IS another story, its not MC and cortana. i'll agree that a halo 3 sequel probably isn't necessary (although i'm certainly not writing it off so soon) but i think reach will have a fresh story and probably some new gameplay elements that will change gameplay considerably.

While I may not be a Halo freak I will say I love the Halo Universe. Hearing the stories of humans outmatched at every turn by a collection of races with greater technology is intriguing, plus I love the whole Navy in space thing.

While many don't want to agree Master Chief is to xbox as Mario was to Nintendo or Sonic was to Sega. The stories in the game while not deep are but a drip of water in the universe that is Halo.... besides Red vs Blue is pure win .

I'm not knocking it. I very much enjoy the story in the Halo series. I also very much enjoy the games. But I already own 4 games that give me that same gameplay. Yes, they vary in subtle ways, but you can only tweek a system to keep it fresh for so long.

smurphster at 07:08 AM on 10.9.2009

yeah that's more of an alternate reality though

@hedgehogaj: i think reach will be different and fresh enough to constitute a purchase. we'll see.

Shazoo at 08:00 AM on 10.9.2009
I agree with hedgehogaj. I myself passed on ODST since for me it didn't bring much innovation outside of an expansion campaign. Alot of "friends" reviews I've read also say the game feels rushed and lazy in that campaign, as well as the firefight seems to take forever to get interesting. I need something new, awesome and exciting to pay another $60 if it's got Halo in the title, and if it comes bundled with Halo 3 MP again, thats a deduction, since it's just "filler" material.

I don't see how someone can disagree with that. I mean, are there any characters that are more wide-spread and recognized on the XBox than Master Chief? Maybe that one guy from Gears of War, but I think at the end of the day, you'd have to admit that Master Chief has pretty much been partnered with the XBox logo. When a game series is brought up constantly and consistently as a selling point for a console/company. . . I'd say that character is your mascot.

The only exception I can think to that is Sparkster (whom I hope makes more of an appearance once Rocket Knight releases).

Bakken Hood at 09:20 AM on 10.9.2009
I'm looking at Reach with cautious optimism. ODST was a bit of a letdown (mind you, I'm still thoroughly enjoying Firefight), but at least they had an excuse; they were working on a strict timeline and couldn't do anything with the game engine. If Reach has Firefight, and it damn well should, I have to assume it'll have some way to find an open game. Plus, if they don't enable drop-in/drop-out, I'm personally setting their company HQ on fire.

I guess the short version is, I'm looking forward to Reach because it might fix what was wrong with ODST. I realize how sad that is, but I'm only a little ashamed to say I'm happy with "just more Halo" and another thirty seconds of fun. Elites, armies of Spartans, no Flood...sounds good to me.

xxW4R EAGL3xx at 07:03 AM on 10.10.2009

Yeah, they better be elites this time. I loved fighting elites. By the way MC possibly will be in the game, he was in the book! A new firefight, and new multiplayer better be on there. I'm tying to condiser if I should even get ODST if Reach will have what ODST has now. With completely new multiplayer of course!
