Co-Op only Unlocked after Completing Single Player in Modern Warfare 2 [UPDATE]

Sigh. Sometimes I have to wonder what the heck is going on over at Infinity Ward and other developers that make a decision like this. According to the Telegraph review of Modern Warfare 2, the game's only cooperative mode Special Ops, is only playable after completing the game's single player campaign.
Update: Please see the update below, it looks like the Guardian review was wrong. Co-Op is available without completing the single player game first. "Spec Ops is a major portion of the game and is available from the start," Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward community manager told us, "It asks you if you want to play Spec Ops when you beat the game." This is where it seems the confusion may have happened.
At least it sounds like Spec-Ops will be worth the wait.
The game's new mode is Special Ops which can be played solo or in co-op, both local and online. It's unlocked by completing the campaign mode, and is essentially a series of mini-missions; their design is similar to the epilogue mission in COD4's campaign mode, "Mile High Club". They're divided into four groups – Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta – and are based on sections within the campaign's levels. They include scenarios such as defending a raised platform in a snow-covered shipyard, racing snowmobiles across tundra and taking out guerrillas in a favela in Rio de Janeiro while avoiding civilian casualties. A couple of fan-favourites from COD4 are also included, such as the chilling Death From Above mission in AC-10 Spectre Gunship. Special Ops range from one to three stars in their level of difficulty, and players can use the stars they earn to unlock more challenges. There are 23 missions in all, and a lot of them are highly addictive; the temptation to better one's time in the snowmobile race is particularly compelling.
This is good news for our co-op night this Thursday!
Soap box time. Seriously, I can't recall a bigger game launch that has more negativity surrounding it in recent times than Modern Warfare 2. It's a lot worse for PC players, as this Ars Technica article summarizes:
- No dedicated servers
- Steam required
- Only 9 vs 9
- No mod support
- No console command support
It's not all roses on the console either. Xbox 360 users won't be able to use party chat in certain online multiplayer playlists.
Update: According to Co-Optimus member Tino, the Guardian review is actually incorrect. Spec-Ops is accessible without completing single player, but you'll have to unlock the missions as you progress through the cooperative mode. We've pinged PR to get clarification.
Update 2: We've gotten multiple tips from people who managed to snag the game early thanks to broken street dates that the Guardian article is indeed wrong. Co-Op is available without completing the single player game first.

The increased price, removal of co-op, neglect of PC owners - this all smacks of a company too big for its boots and waiting for a fall.
honestly, other than the pc related stuff i don't know what all the fuss is about...it's like negativity continues to breed more negativity...and people are finding excuses to complain over the smallest of things...i am pumped for this title and will be picking mine up at midnight launch tonight!
oh and btw...best buy is offering $10 off for Assassins Creed 2 if you preorder online or $10 gift card if you preorder in store...$49.99 is a sweet deal for AC2 at launch.
It's not ideal that you have to complete the singleplayer, I do that anyway, but it also stops armies of idiots not having a clue what they are doing player. I recently played L4D2 demo and had that happen. Imo more games should have this as a pre-requisit, but that's just me.
As for 'removing' campaign co-op. Modern warfare 1 never had it, so anything we get is a bonus. Games that are heavly scripted like this don't do well in coop anyway. Can you imagine the shock and awe level having as much of an impact if I was there going "Weeeeeeee!"?
No party chat in ranked games makes sence as it stops cheating.
PC owners are getting screwed over, and locking the co-op away is a boneheaded move, but I think eople are going a bit over board with this. Maybe it's because I don't really care for the game, but I don't think it's a huge deal.
Most of the missions are locked, but you unlock them as you progress in Spec Ops.
People are not complaining over small thing, I had no intention on getting MW2 from the get go but the more I hear about what they are doing just makes me think the guys in charge at IW are arrogant and don't care what they put out because at the end of the day they have a horde of CoD fanboys who will buy it solely for the competitive MP.
@Sabre while I tend to agree with some of your points CoD was no more cinematic than Gears 2 and that whole thing was co-op. Also having to play the single player to unlock the co-op is just lame anyway you spell it, regardless of matchmaking noobs it is still lame.
Tino, your post gives me hope, since I see that you've already played. This would be a good news story to redact.
As for the PC version.... wellll.... Seems to me like all they did was directly port the console version over to PC. No dedicated servers, no leaning (for balancing reasons?? YEAH RIGHT!), 9v9 (wtf is that about?), etc etc. I played CoD4 competitively, and was really looking forward to a renewed community of competition with this release. Seems like IW has done everything in there power to keep that from happening.
This has me really bummed out.
i'm still not buying it for a while though.
You're telling me. IW was about to fill up their own grave after digging it these past few weeks.
