Zombies Can't Survive Modern Warfare

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Zombies and Helicopters don't mix.

Despite the success of Nazi Zombie's in Call of Duty: World at War, we won't be seeing the likes of the undead shamble across the modern battlefield.  While many had hoped to see a similar style mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it's been confirmed by community manager Robert Bowling that we won't be getting anything of the sort.

"There will be no Nazis or zombies in any piece of Modern Warfare 2 downloadable content."

The reason?  Most likely Infinity Ward is too busy patching their game from the constant griefers and cheaters that exploit it every week.  But perhaps if there's time we'll see some sort of new mode.  Maybe the psychotic Ooompa Loompa Survival mode everyone's been craving will finally see the light of day.

Although I think Spec Ops was fun I do think that CoDMW2 could have done with some true co-op. The zombies were fun for a while in CoDWaW, but I want more, MORE!

zombies fit better in a WWII setting anyway. although it would have been nice to see more co-op features/modes in MW2 (i might have actually bought it in that case).

"zombies fit better in a WWII setting anyway."

Care to explain this one, chief? I'm pretty sure that zombies exist EVERYWHERE. Including steampunk London.

there are tons of stories about hitler's scientists experimenting with genetic alteration and such and even more stories about his infatuation with the occult. zombies kind of fit in there right?

That's why we have Left 4 Dead

Gotta agree with severe_009; Left 4 Dead seems a more fitting place if you want your zombie fix.

Nazi Zombies was fun for about a day or two, but I just didn't see the appeal. There was no teamwork or anything in any game of it that I played -- at the start, sure, people planned where they would go first. But around wave 5, it became a cluster of people just running around, complaining if someone stole their headshot, and people complaining when no one helped them out when they wouldn't help out anyone themselves. My friend kept spamming me invites to play, but every time I joined, it was just the same thing over and over. I don't see how that's fun. :S

If I want to shoot zombies, I'll gather three friends and hunt down a Tank or something. It just seems more fun.

how is that a problem with the game? it sounds like you're not playing with the right people and taking it out on the game. i'm guessing if you played L4D with the same people, you'd have the same problems.

I don't see the problem. They don't want zombie coop in their series war game. Hows that an issue?

I'm not taking it out on the game. I don't mean to be sounding like that. I'm simply saying the game mode is too shallow. The focal point of the whole mode is just to survive as long as you can -- you're not going to live, and the point is to get on the leaderboard. I guess I'm just not that kind of gamer; I want a goal to work for.

I want a safe house, I suppose you could say.

I only played with one person; we always brought in randoms to get a full game. (The friend started off co-op-ish, for what its worth, but quickly learned it was better to go it on your own.) I recall of everyone we played with, one person was co-op focused. He would pick you up, or die trying. I thought he was the coolest player I had played with, and even though he declined my friend request, I still thought of him like an idol. So I tried to play like that, too. And yet all I got was told that it easier to just let people die to get the waves to keep going, since they would revive at the end anyway.

Left 4 Dead provides two things for me, which is why I don't see why it's bad Modern Warfare 2 wouldn't have a zombie mode. Left 4 Dead provides 1) Stronger zombies to be concerned about, that can actually disable a team-mate to the point they need help, and 2) a goal (safe house) that teamwork is needed to reach. There's no worries about headshots for more money. There's no worries about killsteals. There's no worries about boarding up windows between waves. It's all about teamwork -- you go it alone, and you're done. Even on Easy, a Hunter can rip you to shreds if you aren't paying attention when you're alone.

That's where my gripe with Nazi Zombies comes in. It's not the community I played with; it's the structure of the mode itself. I liked the early waves, where people planned. Every game devolved into running solo to rack up headshots to eek out money to buy a gun for yourself. Working with a team-mate to clear out a doorway was often frowned upon. And you're going to die anyways; it's just like Survival mode in Left 4 Dead. Yet in Left 4 Dead, at least there are still zombies that can disable you. There's no focal point of why you do this in Nazi Zombies as well; all there is is the leaderboard to guide you.

So as I said, I'm not taking it out on the game. I'm simply taking this from a point of view that Nazi Zombies, at its core, was a very poorly done mode of gameplay. There was no incentive to work as a team, other than to be put on a leaderboard. Left 4 Dead provides a better "zombie fix" for teamwork simply by design.

Of course, I will submit that I didn't download the third pack for Nazi Zombies, because at that point I had reached my patience with the mode. I remember there being dogs in the second pack, but they were nothing more than faster moving zombies. They brought nothing special to the table. Perhaps that changed in the third map; I don't know. All I know is, for teamwork, Left 4 Dead provides me a much more interactive and fun co-op experience than Nazi Zombies could hope to bring. Even in playing with zergers in Left 4 Dead, the simple fact that there are zombies that disable and require teamwork should one strike far outweighs Nazi Zombies in the amount of co-op the game provides. Even when playing with zergers and griefers who only are out for their own survival, the game is substantially more fun and better designed than the Nazi Zombie mode was.

No problem; I realize that the first post is a touch confusing, and the second one is a touch ramble-y. Eventually, I'll master that thing called "being clear and concise".

The zombie mode in WaW was alright but there really wasn't a lasting appeal.

That said Spec ops does not have a lasting appeal either... once you have done it you will never go back to do it again.

I can't take that film seriously. From the trailers it looks like a bunch of fans after robie coltrains autograph.
