Beyond Co-Op, January 30th to February 5th

Welcome to Beyond Co-Op, a weekly piece that talks about industry stories that may or may not be related to co-op gaming.

The stories for this week:

- Halo HD Coming This Fall?
- Battlefield 3 Official, PC Ports of 1943/BC 2: Onslaught Cancelled
- Dragon Age II Demo Coming February 22, Star Wars: The Old Republic Delayed
- Demon's Souls Sequel, Dark Souls Unveiled
- Mario Sports Mix, You Don't Know Jack and Test Drive Unlimited 2 This Week

Halo HD Coming This Fall?

Rumors are growing that 343 Industries’ first entry into game development will be a reinterpretation of the original Halo game adding in updated controls, new art assets and a broad multiplayer gametype, something the original didn’t have since Live was not around yet.

No one knows when this will be announced, but many are guessing this will be out in the fall while 343 works on Halo 4 or whatever the next game will be called. Obviously this one will probably not be called Halo HD, but that’s what we’re calling it for now.

Battlefield 3 Official, PC Ports of 1943/BC 2: Onslaught Cancelled

Good news is that the long awaited Battlefield 3 is now official. The bad news is that DICE has cancelled all other games they’ve been working on to put all their might behind this game. This means you will never see a PC version of Battlefield: 1943 or Bad Company 2: Onslaught. DICE must really believe in Battlefield 3 considering they have been doing multiple games in the recent past at the same time. This game will not be PC only though, it will also be coming out on the consoles and be built around the Frostbite 2 engine.

Dragon Age II Demo Coming February 22, Star Wars: The Old Republic Delayed

BioWare was in the news this week. First they denied that there would be a Dragon Age II demo coming out and then they announced there would be one coming out on February 22. Now, I never played the first game, I should pick that up at some point.

The sadder news this week is that BioWare’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has been delayed into the second half of the year. Could the Midas touch of BioWare finally turn bronze with this game? Who knows, but given the Star Wars fans out there I can’t believe this won’t pay off in the end.

Demon's Souls Sequel, Dark Souls Unveiled

Another game I never played will see a sequel coming out later this year in Japan on the PS3. It will later see release here in the West on both PS3 and 360 ala Final Fantasy XIII. Let’s just hope the versions are a little closer in this case. I know the game is well loved and I’m sure there are plenty of people waiting for this game. Now if we would only hear word about The Last Guardian.

Mario Sports Mix, You Don't Know Jack and Test Drive Unlimited 2 This Week

Don’t really care about the first one, but those looking for a Wii fix will probably pick it up. You Don’t Know Jack makes a reappearance this week, it will be interesting to see if it can duplicate the awesomeness it was way back when. Finally, Atari’s Test Drive Unlimited 2 comes out this week. The original game was well loved as being something not named Burnout or Need for Speed. I hope they can duplicate the magic this time around as well…it’s been too long since the original (2006/2007).
