Portal 2 Between Consoles, No Difference in Gameplay or User Content

With the impending triple release of Portal 2 on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, many people may be wondering which version to get. Many games seem to favor a platform for one reason or another, but the folks at Valve want you to know that it doesn’t matter which version of their game you choose. Portal 2 will be Portal 2 regardless where you play it.

This may make the decision more difficult as gamers rely on side-by-side comparisons from websites like LensofTruth to make their decision for them. This time, which version of Portal 2 you purchase is entirely up to you - the gamer.

The actual content [of Portal 2] will be the same across both platforms. The PS3 version is getting connectivity with Valve's Steamworks, allowing PS3 users to receive more game updates faster and play side-by-side with PC players. However, if you have the 360 version, the bulk of your experience should mirror the experiences of those playing it on PS3, and you'll be receiving the same updates as PS3 users, according to Valve.

Though, the “editing” tools that Valve fans have come to know and love for building levels and exploring the limits of the game will only be on PC, all of the content generated there will also make its way to the console versions eventually. According to an interview with Valve’s Chet Faliszek the user generated content for the game will be universal cross platform.

The mod tools have to stay on the PC side just because there’s a bunch of dependencies that require the Windows platform. But the content that comes out is agnostic, and so we will be seeing that on all the platforms. Depending on the platform you’re on I should say, will depend on how we’re delivering it.

In the case of Portal 2 you should pick your poison and share that flavor with your friends to insure the most co-op-ability in the game. Co-op is looking quite nice in these screens.
