Beyond Co-Op, April 24th to April 30th

Welcome to Beyond Co-Op, a weekly piece that talks about industry stories that may or may not be related to co-op gaming.

The stories for this week:

- RedBox to Rent Games Starting June 17
- Red Faction: Armageddon Pushed Back One Week to June 7
- Volition Founder and President Resigns
- F.3.A.R (or FEAR 3) Pushed Back One Month to June 21
- Thor and Motorstorm: Apocalypse Highlight Releases This Week

RedBox to Rent Games Starting June 17

The popular movie renting system RedBox will begin renting video games across all its 21,000 kiosks on June 17. They had been testing this in some areas for a while now. The games, supposedly top new releases on all systems, will be rented out for $2 a day. Personally I’m not sure how well this will go, but then again those that rented from Blockbuster may no longer have a store nearby like myself (both locations closed in the city I live in, but there are some still around), but should have a RedBox around. If you can beat the game within 4 days you shouldn’t have to pay more than Blockbuster, but then again maybe GameFly is still the best option.

Red Faction: Armageddon Pushed Back One Week to June 7

No word on why, but THQ pushed the release of Red Faction: Armageddon back one week to June 7. If I were to personally guess, the major reason would be so that the SyFy movie based on the IP will be shown before the release of the game. The movie, Red Faction: Origins premieres on Saturday, June 4. Once again, that is just a guess on my part. Also of note is that the game now comes out the first day of the E3 show, although previews of this game have been quite good so far.

Volition Founder and President Resigns

Somewhat of a surprise here, but Mike Kulas will be leaving Volition this coming Monday. He leaves on the cusp of the release of Red Faction: Armageddon as well as leaving Saints Row 3 “in the home stretch”. Kulas said his departure was not dependant on any specific event or anything. He has overseen the company go from about 30 employees to over 200 today.

F.3.A.R (or FEAR 3) Pushed Back One Month to June 21

Another delay for this game, this time from late May to June 21. Not sure if this is because of development problems or if they want to release the game after E3 with the possibility that the game is not very good. Who knows.

Thor and Motorstorm: Apocalypse Highlight Releases This Week

Not a super busy week with releases, but with Thor releasing on Friday in theaters the tie-in game comes out this week. Surprisingly I’ve heard the game along with the upcoming Captain America one may be good. Along with this the delayed Motorstorm: Apocalypse comes out this week as well, although you probably won’t be playing it online with the ongoing PSN problems.

I didn’t talk about the PSN problems this week because I think they have been widely reported everywhere and I’d just be repeating things. I do think Sony is in a world of hurt over this and if it turns out that credit cards were compromised there could be even bigger problems.
