Did Lionhead Drop the Ball on Fable 2 Co-Op?

Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo October 21st, 2008 at 11:11 AM

The official Fable 2 forums are ablaze with angry co-op gamers, as it appears most of us have been misled as to exactly what the cooperative mode entails.  The main gripe people are having is that your Fable 2 character does not transfer over to any form of co-op.  This applies to both the online and the offline mode.  What you do get is to become a henchmen, something we already knew, but we didn't know how literal the term was.

When Lionhead used the term "henchman" in our interview, they actually meant a henchman character - not a henchmen role.  This mean that character you've worked so hard to customize, including weapons, armor, scars, and other markings all are NOT visible in your friend's game when joining.  On top of this, any items you gain while in a friend's game will not transfer back to your character.  The only thing that transfers is gold, experience and renown.

Unfortunately that's not the end of the issue list.  Players are complaining about a wonky camera system, tethering players together in both local and co-op play.   There's also a glitch when joining someone's game while they are in childhood that could affect and corrupt your own save.  So be careful they are past the introduction stage.

At this point we can only hope for a proper co-op patch to allow your character in other player's games, or your friends character in your game.  This seems to happen far to often when a developer gets this close to getting co-op play done right; to only have it missing a key piece of the equation.

Note to developers - Stripping features out of the co-op experience that you have in single player is never a good thing.

Agreed, to a degree. The original thread was regarding Lionhead dropping the ball on Fable 2, and I feel like it's kind of turned into an argument on who else may or may not of dropped the ball on Co-Op.

But yes, there haven't been many posts recently about Fable II.

Yes, The answer is yes Lionhead DID drop the ball. We know it, they know it. Let's move on and agree EA dropped the ball too

I'll agree to the extent that the camera system is broken. I still hold fast that people are over reacting to the henchman system.

That bums me out that you lost your post. I was looking forward to it.

regardless of the co-op debacle, fable 2 is a fantastic game. phenomenal graphics (amazing HDR lighting and shadow effects), enchanting music, top class (and hilarious) voice acting, and a fast-paced and layered combat system. more importantly, the game is MASSIVE in terms of content. i haven't spent this much time unlocking side missions and finding hidden content since mario 64. the best rpg on 360, and by far one of the most enjoyable gameplay experiences in years.

that's my mini-review.

I think that most gamers agree that Fable II is a great game in and of itself, but in the interest of keeping the topic going: do you think that Lionhead dropped the ball on the CO-OP ASPECT of the game?

FYI, the off-topic discussion has been moved here:

So sound off, what's the biggest issue you have with the co-op? Even if you love the game, what's the biggest thing you don't like about the co-op?

I haven't played the game, but I understand people want to show off their characters when they play with others, but that's not a huge deal with me.

My thing is that they give you a switch to control whether your buddy fights or not. It's a cool idea, but if you're playing someone you should know they enough to trust them NOT to kill your family.

I say True Coop would've made this game a blast, and alot of people here and myself included felt like we've been misled AGAIN by Peter M. Getting that out of the way, the single player is still great fun and after not being able to find Oakvale for the life of me for 2 days, I was running around when I noticed my friends orb, I sent him a text message, then he sent one back, then we plugged in our Mics and started to talk and do the same quests. It made it more of a social experience.

Are you sure there's a switch to control whether the henchman fights? I've had only limited exposure to the co-op, but I seriously don't remember that option.

In response to your question, my biggest complaint is the camera. It's a huge, huge pain in the ass. Having to hit the right bumper to constantly center your camera on your character is archaic. There's a reason why we have two analog sticks!

Couldn't care less about the henchman. Other than the weapons and armor, it's purely aesthetic. The henchman carries over all spells and skills of your primary character.

It's funny, Fable 2's Co-op was the tipping point for me to create an account here.

I have always been a big MP and Co-op player but almost exclusively on FPS's for the last decade, so whenever a new MP shooter comes out my friend's list if full of people playing it.

However, not too many people on my list are big RPGrs and it's too bad since I'd really like to see how different the worlds are that other people create. Especially the evil ones. since I'm playing as a womanizing business mogul, so I have to be "goodie two shoes". So I just figured "Co-optimus" would be the place to come and already being familiar with bAp's work over the last few years, I new it was worthy of the time.

I guess time will tell if my joining because of F2's co-op is helpful to it's case or not. .

I'm enjoying messing around with the interactions so the SP is delivering for me, and even if there are far better co-op experiences to come, I wouldn't call this "dropping the ball", it's just making gamers want more complete and varied Co-op games and I think we all want developers to get that message.

And, in the spirit if this site, it might be a good idea to curb this nrgative over-reaction that is exploding on all the websites, it seems like many people are coming to the conclusion that Lionhead shouldn't have even tried the co-op, and for a gamer who wants more and more varied co-op, I wouldn't want developers to think it isn't worth the try.

So, I guess I wouldn't mind being anyone's henchmen bitch style deficient lame sidekick, just don't call me "Boy Wonder" .

Heck, because of this game, one of my friends has this as his staus:

"Last seen 22 hours ago playing Fable II
Going home for an evening of lovemaking."

Ouch!
