Gears of War 2 Won't Be Released in Germany and Japan

Gears of War fans located in the Empire of the Rising Sun or the Empire of the Drinking Beer (that's Japan and Germany respectively) - look to be out of luck with getting the game's sequel.

Edge Online has confirmed with a Microsoft spokesperson that Epic's co-op shooter will not be released in either regions due to undisclosed regions. We can only assume that because of previous bannings of titles in these respective countries that Microsoft has decided it's not even worth the dollars to pursue or fight it.

Gears of War 2 is set to be released worldwide on November 7th for the Xbox 360.

If I recall correctly, the original Gears of War was released in Japan without any content editing. The reason I heard for them skipping a release there was the abysmal sales it brought in. Also, in Germany, I heard they weren't going to release it there because it would receive the highest and most restrictive rating much like an AO here. Basically a death sentence to it's success.

Sorry to nitpick, but I just hate to see the word censorship thrown around when it's used improperly.

Gears 1 sold 40k the first week in Japan. That's pretty decent considering the install base.

We posted a story recently regarding Duke Nukem 3D being banned in Japan due to content, so I can only imagine this is similar.

After some digging, according to gamespot.com it looks like it won't be released in Germany because they refuse to rate the game and Microsoft has a policy of not releasing any unrated games on their consoles. There's still little information on it not being released in Japan. In fact, I haven't found anything confirming that it won't be released there. Most dispute the violence as a factor in Japan though.

I hear those COG tags have a code on the bottom that can be used on XBOX Live. True? What can you unlock with the code?

Ahh, gotcha.

I heard Major Nelson talking about a code on the bottom and he was being cryptic so I assumed it was for XBOX Live.
