Syndicate's Co-Op Mode Will Be Available to New Buyers and Used Gamers Alike

There will be no need to "breach" your 360 or PS3 in order to enjoy the 4 player online co-op mode in Starbreeze's upcoming revival of the PC classic Syndicate. In a move that's a bit different from how they (and many other publishers) are currently releasing games, publisher EA has stated that no online pass will be required in order to play the game with friends. This means that whether you buy the game used or new, you'll have access to all of the content that originally comes on the disc.

Jeff Gamon, EA Partners executive producer, had this to say about the decision:

We want as little resistance or barriers to entry as possible...The co-op is equal billing in this. We wanted everyone who owns a copy of the game to have access to the entire product.

It's certainly an encouraging statement, but one that we shouldn't necessarily get too excited about. Gamon went on to say that had the game included a competitive multiplayer aspect, then it would certainly have required an online pass. He added:

But because it didn't have competitive multiplayer and because we wanted as many people as possible to be playing co-op, we got away with it

It's that last bit, the "we got away with it," that I find troubling. Usually, it's not a good thing to "get away with something," as it implies you only just managed to get something done. Based on what Gamon is saying, in some ways it feels like Syndicate is a test case for this kind of decision. Should sales of the game and, more importantly, the continued time players spend with the game's co-op mode manage to hold gamers' attention (read: we don't trade the game in a week after picking it up), then we could see more games with co-op modes not get bogged down with those pesky online passes.

Time will tell how all of this pans out, but we will continue to hope that Syndicate sets a trend for removing the otherwise limiting feature of an online pass from co-op modes.

i posted this on another thread, but my theory is they didn't think it was cost effective to include a pass on a game that may not sell like hotcakes to begin with. there are real costs they have to deal with up-front (development, servers) plus ongoing costs (customer support, server maintenance, etc). if they're unsure if a game will do well, adding more cost is not a good idea.

This is good news, one of primary co-op partners is unsure of this one but now it can be a rental if I can't sell him on it!

That's nice but doesn't matter to me. Tried the demo with a buddy and the gameplay is horrible! Also, anyone else have trouble with the final boss guy?

It takes three players to beat the final boss. One to breach his armor, one to attack and one dedicated to using Shield and healing. Once we figured it out and added a fourth player it was easy even on Hard difficulty.

Is there no game chat without a party? As I just played it last night and no one was talking.

We kept dying until I think we finally killed him or the game dropped us. I am enjoying it immensely, though I admit some enemies come out of nowhere with rocket launchers, but I will love playing this.

There is chat, I just don't think many people are using their mics... except the people that like to blare latin music while playing. Strangely I've had that happen to me twice already!

I've had a guy in a group of four repeatedly shoot and kill the team.

I'm hoping that after release, some more co-op missions will be in the pipe as DLC or something of that nature.

This isn't the only mission at release, right? From what I read, the single-player campaign should prepare you for the co-op missions. So I think the co-op will be their bread and butter similar to Halo's MP.

I read that it would take 50 hours to play the single player campaign on all 3 dificulties.

I read that there would be 9 coop missions and it would take 6 to 7 hours for each play through.
