Resistance 2 Co-Op Campaign About 15-20 Hours

According to a post on the NeoGAF forums by Insomniac Games community manager J Stevenson, the co-op campaign should take somewhere in the neck of 15-20 hours to complete on it's own.  This was in a response to a post complaining that the co-op campaign only had 5 maps.

There are six locations, each has quite a few different areas, and a single-playthrough of any will not show you nearly the entire map or all of the different set-ups on it due to the randomization of the playpath. It probably takes between 15-20 hours to see every single co-op set-up and encounter.

If you read our hands on preview,  you would have heard about the random objectives per map. The handful of times our team successfully completed a map it took about 45 minutes.  You may also remember I said the downside of the map randomization is that it seems to hurt the story in co-op mode.  I believe the above statement pretty much confirms each map is basically a set of objectives against AI, and not a true campaign.  And that's perfectly fine in my book.

I remember the first Resistance campaign being quite long as well (right around 15 hours /-).

I'm quite glad that the developers are continuing to focus on a robust and LONG campaign experience... unlike, <cough> the Call of Duty developers.

I wonder how the game will handle the coop campaign. Will it be drop in/drop out? Since the game offers a different campaign for coop leaving the single player campaign out of the equation, how will it determine where a coop campaign starts for a team of players? Will it remember where we each left off in the coop campaign and depending on who hosts will determine where it starts?

Gears had a drop in/drop out but it was based on where the host was in their single player campaign.

With the game fast approaching I'm starting to wonder about a few of these things.

This is awesome, but I do wish I could still do split screen through the story with my friend like on the first one. I like both modes for different reasons.

I don't know, I'd say from the beta there's no drop-in/drop-out and in fact there won't be a seamless campaign.

I bet you do a mission, go back to the party screen, do a mission go back to the party screen. Something like that.

That's just the impression I got from the interface in the beta.

That makes sense and is exactly how GRAW2 handles the coop campaign (one mission at a time).

hold the phone! Did someone just say this is NOT split-screen coop? Can we confirm that?

bapenguin at 12:59 PM on 10.30.2008
No, it has split screen. Just check our database if you ever have a doubt.

I guess the confusion is - there is no split screen or any co-op through the single player. The co-op campaign is different.

@Jason, that was my first thought too after the above comment. Thanks for setting it straight bapenguin.

SORRY! No no, I didint mean to cause any confusion.

This game has awesome split screen co-op. You can split screen AND go online at the same time even. which is awesome.

I was just hoping to be able to play through the main story that is the single player mode with a buddy.

Dont get me wrong, the co-op mode is awesome, I loved it in the beta, but the single player main story mode is more similar to the first game. As far as I am aware, this mode has no options for co-op.

Hmm...The original Resistance had split screen coop story mode, which was awesome.

It sounds like this new "coop" mode in Resistance 2 will be really fun..but did they really remove the coop story mode?

Here's what it sounds like the games have in terms of split screen and coop:

Resistance 1:
single player story mode
coop story mode (split screen)

Resistance 2:
single player story mode
coop story mode (NO split screen - Online Only)
coop mode (split screen and Online)

does that sound right?

I think its more like this for resistance 2

Single player only main story (Unless there is a split screen mode I dont know about)

Co-op Mode. (It is its own side story that runs paralel to the single player story) This can be played both online, split screen, AND online WHILE split screen.

Competitive mode. This can also be played online, split screen, AND online WHILE split screen. I dont know if you can have bot opponants,

The co-op mode has a lot of replay value because the levels randomize the tasks availble so you would have to play it several times just to see all the possible "missions" and you can level up your characters, so there is incentive to play it over and over.

The single player mission has different weapons you can collect on your second play through so there is incentive to play through that agian.

The competitive mode allows for ranking up and has leaderboards so there is a lot of incentive to play that a lot as well...

Basically it all boils down to this game providing a whole lot of bang for your buck. Its a must have if you like shooters and have a PS3.

blake - thanks for the extremely detailed summary. I do hope that this coop mode will be reminiscent to the actual story mode. I just don't want to take the time to play through Single Player and then another type of campaign mode. Especially when we have other AAA titles like GOW2 and COD5 all coming out around the same time frame.

No problem, I'm glad to help.

I'm actually opposite on this, I am thrilled that this game is bursting with replayability. I hope to be able to play it for months and possibly years.

I wonder if you can pull off more than two player split screen while online. It would be a blast to get four of my buddies over and then go online to take names...

You would think they would patch the USB port stuff.. Its just silly to have to unplug stuff that you usually just leave plugged
