Borderlands 2 is More Co-Op, More Dubstep

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

It's only been a few weeks since we've seen the best trailer in videogames this year.  Borderlands 2 looks to be bigger, better and more badass than the original in many ways.  Game Informer has an interview with the game's writer Anthony Burch and concept artist Scott Kester in which they chat about the changes coming to the sequel, including details on the new characters, abilities, and story.

The first question was based on the new character Zero, who looks a bit like a ninja.  The obvious question is - "Is he a melee based character?"

Zer0 is actually a long-range and a close-range character. His skill is deception, where he throws down a clone of himself and goes invisible to get stealth attacks and stealth kills. We gave the option that the way his skill trees are built, you can go down a more focused close-range side of him and get in and get those kills that way. But we didn’t want to pigeon-hole him as a character that only works up close. He kind of fulfills the Mordecai promise, but his skill tree is drastically different. Mordecai is basically, "Go get him, bird," and you sit back and watch the bird cause mayhem. With Zer0, you have to really get in and control the character. It’s kind of night and day

Another exciting change is in general how the world looks and feels.  While Borderlands had a desolate wasteland type persona, Borderlands 2's world will feel more alive.   The zones are bigger, but the action is more dense.  That's not to say the game isn't going for that feeling of apocalypse, but it's just approaching it ina  different way to keep things more interesting.

On the co-op side of things we already know Borderlands 2 is getting split-screen with online play, ala combo co-op.  But there are some other much welcome cooperative changes coming, a lot of these were pretty large complaints from the first game.

Quest eligibility issues have all been fixed. You're eligible for any quest that your friend has. If you join my game, and I’m on the last mission of the game, you can still do it with me.

In addition to that, there are four player co-op vehicles, like that from the Secret Armory of General Knoxx.  There's also a larger focus on skills that help players in co-op.  For instance the Gunzerker can draw aggro, drawing enemies off of other players while the siren has some crowd control abilties.

The interview wraps up with a discussion about dub step and whether or not it will be included in the game.  How much is 96.5% more exactly?  Finally - my favorite bit of news - Moxxi is returning as a quest giver in the main game.

Borderlands 2 will be out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on September 18th.  It features 4 player online co-op and 2 player split-screen play along with combo co-op.

I'm super excited for this. I'm thinking about getting the original so my wife and I can play through it together, but I don't know if it's necessary for her to appreciate the glory that will be Borderlands 2.

Nice to hear about the co-op quest eligibility. I've been playing through the game with my friend slowly over the past year and it's like I have to make sure I have a character devoted only to that game. It's not like I can whip up a new character if I feel like changing it up or can't import my main character who I used to beat the game twice. Very, very good news in my book.

Also, Zero sounds pretty cool. I'm wondering if when they say "close range" combat they mean melee with the sword or something like a shotgun. I didn't like Brick in the first game because to attack with melee you had to use the R3 button. Granted, it became easier when you activated his skill, so I guess if Zero works similarly (guns normal and a sword with the skill) I could definitely see myself enjoying him. The notion of turning invisible and stabbing a bunch of nearby enemies is pretty sweet.

Good news. Really looking forward to this.
Indeed, Zero sounds cool. I wonder if his special melee attacks are similar to the trailer where we see short action sequences during kills (crotch stabs and all that).

Definitely get the first game mate. You should be able to get the GOTY ed with all the DLC for a pretty cheap price by now. There's just so much content. My bro and I have gone through the main game twice using all 4 characters. We're still experiencing the DLC (don't get to game as much these days).

Well you know you can count on me to be on playing this a metric shitton, evne after I 100%. just like how I still play the old one, I really hope this becomes a series and gets a third. I know it's foolish to ask for more thna that though cuz not all games have what it takes to get back the trilogy and Borderlands is kinda like a cult classic, not really a huge mondo thing like COD, MW, mass effect, and the elder scrolls games.

Hopefully this one is crazy awesome though so the game gets attention and following
