Torchlight 2 Should Launch Shortly After Diablo 3

News
Twitter facebook googlebuzz

Torchlight 2 was supposed to see the light of day last year, but we were told to just go play some other awesome games while Runic continues to make Torchlight 2 awesome.  So here we are a month away from the biggest PC release in years, that would be Diablo 3, and there's still no official word on Torchlight 2's status.

What we do have is a quote from Runic head honcho Max Schaefer that sheds some light on the game's release goals.

Well, I'm sure you've noticed Diablo has announced a date. So, we don't want to fall right on that. The real answer is when [Torchlight 2] is finished, is Diablo 3 right now? Then we'll wait."

Schaefer said the launch date will "ideally" be shortly after the one occupied by Diablo -- and optimistically it'll be a month later. He noted that Runic isn't going to rush to beat Blizzard, however. With the two products selling alongside one another, he feels it's best to polish the game as much as possible. He doesn't want to be the "cheap" alternative, simply the less expensive one at a $20 price. He also noted the game would have an offline mode, modding, LAN support, and that its pacing would separate it from the competition.

If you compare Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2, head to head (and it's hard not to), the Runic folks are still doing alright.  We've been waiting on Diablo 3 for the better part of 10 years while Torchlight 2 has only been in development two.  Both games are going to be massively awesome cooperative experiences and frankly, and while...yes - it probably would have been in Runic's best interest to get the game out the door before D3 - we're glad they are taking the time to get things right.

Torchlight 2 will launch on the PC with 8 player co-op play and cost $20.

I'm sure Torchlight 2 will be awesome, but I don't know how many will care once Diablo hits their hands. I know I probably won't, and it sucks that they didn't have it out already to capitalize on the fans that are craving diablo-esque gameplay with all the news on D3's upcoming release.

That's kinda what I think too. They must have had some kind of major problem to not be able to get it out before D3. I think it would have sold oodles if they got it out first. Now many people are going wait a long time before feeling the need to get Torchlight.

ALTHOUGH, having said that, I may be one of the ones who is leaning towards Torchlight. I'm not mind blown by D3 yet.

I got into the D3 beta and it was rather lackluster. I played D2 to mess with the classes and make unique new builds and play around, but this time around they've really locked the classes into wht they can and can't do. Can't make a melee demon hunter, can't make a throwing barb, can't make a melee wizard, it's just ridiculous. All of this happened in a patch too, prior to said patch it seemed all of this was allowed and encouraged. Now every skill button has a mix of 4-5 skills that can only be used on said slot(rmbSkill a,b,c,d; lmbSkills e,f,g,h; etc.)

And all the skills did practicably the same thing. As a monk I started off with shocking fist, it had a 3 hit combo then a delay, then at like level 5 i unlocked a pulse fist, it had slightly added range but used the same animation and was a 3 hit combo.

Torchlight 2 has one big leg up on DIII. It will be coming to consoles. While there is still hope for DIII to show up on the consoles, T2 has experience in doing so already and sold well. As long as they get to the consoles first, they will be able to take advantage of the DIII hype instead of fighting against it in the PC space.

Torchlight 2 is coming to consoles? I thought the developer said it wouldnt be possible due to the RAM limitations.
If this is true, it shot to the near top of my list (although still right behind D3)

yeah, Torchlight 2 has not been announced yet for anything other than PC.

I'm probably still leaning more towards Torchlight 2 than Diablo 3. If their predecessors are anything to go by, the loot drops in Torchlight just keep the game more interesting than Diablo did.

Diablo was on consoles long before Torchlight 1 was even in production. To be honest, I wish they'd bring it back and release it as a download title.

I played Torchlight and enjoyed it.

Only thing wrong here, is that when Diablo 3 releases, just like Shazoo said earlier people won't be that bothered, and I'm in with that crowd.

Then again, I'm a sucker for these type of games, and I'll end up getting both no doubt.

I'm torn between the two. I have been a diablo fan but really enjoyed torchlight 1. Runic has been quiet on TL2 release. I can't even preorder from Amazon. To add to it, this is the first piece of news in months for me and I'm hearing more and more about D3 as we approach release day.
