Alert! New Red Alert 3 Co-Op Details

News

Electronic Arts continues to develop games that are at the forefront of co-op gaming.  It's amazing that a company that has been constantly ridiculed for recycled content is breaking new grounds with games like Army of Two for co-op play.  Now, trying something totally radical, EA is creating an RTS sequel that has an entire co-op campaign.  And we aren't just talking about your run of the mill two guys against AI in skirmish mode.   Red Alert 3 will feature a full fledged story based campaign mode where players must work together in order to complete objectives.

There's an integrated co-op experience where literally the two players have to work in tandem to pursue some goal. On a stealth mission, for example, you may have one guy who's moving a big, bulky shield generator unit and the other guy has to take his assault force and has to keep it underneath the cover of that shield generator unit. That's a very intimate co-op experience because they're talking into their voice-over-IP headsets and they have to coordinate their movements that way.

Red Alert 3 continues the setting of the previous Red Alert titles with an alternate history in place.  With an added 3rd coalition on the rise, and the threat of mechanized ninjas - there's no way anybody should be missing this game!  IGN has the full interview which is definitely worth a read.

Pretty cool since I've got quite a few hours in Red Alert 2, Generals and C&C3, but it isn't entirely new, RTS with full co-op campaign. I think I added the game Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2 to the PC list, that one already had it and is from '03 or '04 I believe. (up to 5 men co-op I believe)

What's different is actually creating the story around having 2 Generals.

I'm not up to speed with AoT, what does this have that Gears of War doesnt? they both look very similar to me.

They are very similar, but the fact that the levels are designed around two people make it fresh. The game is designed to be played by 2 people from the ground up.

I hope that there is a way to share control over the units in an army. Would be great if one player is only able to control the ground forces and the other player controls the naval and air forces.

Warcraft 3 had a great Share Units system that would work if you'd play custom maps online that were somehow co-op like.
