Co-op as a learning experience for kids?

My kids have been relentless about wanting to play on my xbox with me.  I knew I could only stand so many more games of Feeding Frenzy before I lost my mind so I decided to let them play co-op with me.

But most if not all of my games are rated "M".  What to do?

My wife had already expressed her reservations about them playing with me so I decided if my kids and I were going to play together, then I needed to make it some sort of a learning experience.

So first I had to choose what game to try this with.  I needed a universe with a rich story line that they and I could all relate to and also where there would be enough material to choose from.

I have decided to start with Halo: Reach.

About a week or two before all of this, we were at the store and they wanted me to buy them something and while walking down the toy aisle, they were suddenly so excited that they had found action figures, "From that game that you play, Dad!"

How could I say no to that?

Anyway, since I have three kids and one I feel is still too young, we have been playing split-screen.  We play for less than an hour at a clip and I play with only one of them at a time.

Before I go any farther, I need to warn of spoilers.  If you continue reading this and have not played the game, I'm going to give away some "No... I am your father." kinds of stuff.

Last chance to stop reading...

With that out of the way, we are getting close to the part where we are going to blow up the super carrier and George buys the farm.  I am really curious to see how they are going to take it.  When they play Mario and etc, the character never really dies and they are really getting into these characters.

They have seen characters in Harry Potter and etc die, but I'm wondering if this will be different because of the way they they have been able to interact with Noble Team on screen.

This will be a lesson in self-sacrifice to be sure.
