The Shallow Talent Pool

Paul Eiding. Steve Blum. Jennifer Hale. Tara Strong. Nolan @#$%ing North. Recognize these names? If you don't you should, because I dare you to name one game where one of these people isn't a voice actor in it. They're everywhere. There's even Youtube videos about Nolan @#$%ing North being in EVERYTHING. Here are some of their roles:

Paul Eiding
Roy Campbell (Metal Gear Solid series)
Theseus (God of War II)
Halo: Reach (Multiplayer Spartan Commander)
Skyrim (Galmar Stone-Fist, Septimus Sigmus, Felldir the Old)

Steve Blum
Bulletstorm (Grayson Hunt)
Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening (Oghren)
Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Leandros)
Call of Duty Zombies (Tank Dempsey)

Jennifer Hale
Bastila Shan (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)
Female Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)
Naomi Hunter (Metal Gear Solid)
Halo 4 (Sara Palmer)

Tara Strong
Harley Quinn (Batman: Arkham City)
Juliet (Lollipop Chainsaw)
Seth Balmore (Lost Odyssey)
Paz Ortega Andrade (Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker)

Nolan @#$%ing North
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
Desmond Miles (Assassin's Creed)
Captain Martin Walker (Spec Ops: The Line)
Deadpool (various Marvel games)
Too many others to mention

These are just a few examples. You could fill a book with the resumes of these actors on IMDB, and that's just their video game credits. They also do tons of animated movies and TV shows. I'm not knocking their successes; most actors would kill to get as much work as these five individuals. Here's my problem: in most of the roles these people play, you can easily identify their voices. Nathan Drake and Desmond Miles sound exactly the same. There's nothing different. Their inflections and accents are identical. Steve Blum is the same type of character in most of his roles. Same with Paul Eiding. The women aren't quite as easy to identify, but when I'm playing a game for the first time, and I can go "Yup, there's Nolan @#$%ing North again...", that somewhat breaks the experience for me. Are there no other voice actors in the gaming world with talent? Why do I need to hear Nathan Drake coming out of this completely different character? Talented Hollywood actors can play roles wildly different from each other successfully. I'm certainly no expert on voice acting, but I would think an integral part of it would be to help mold a character into a unique individual; someone who stands out and is memorable. Sometimes though, especially with Nolan @#$%ing North, it's like they're playing an identical characterization across multiple roles. Is it not the job of an actor to become a different person in their role?

When an actor does make an effort though, that character can become almost iconic. David Hayter as Solid Snake. David Bateson as Agent 47. Michael Ironside as Sam Fisher. Ironside's voice is easily identifiable, but it's going to be hard to play the next Splinter Cell without his style. Did you know that Charles Martinet, who has been the voice of Mario for over 15 years, also voices Paarthunax from Skyrim? That's right; the same guy who yells out "It's-a-me, Mario!" also voices the former right hand of the Dragonian version of the Devil. I could see someone other than Nolan @#$%ing North voicing Nathan Drake, but not Mario or Snake.

My point is that it would be nice to hear different voice talent other than the same 5 or 6 people in everything. It's bad when it's that easy to point out every voice in almost any game. Imagine that every movie you see for the next 20 years will always star the same 5 actors. You'd get pretty sick of it, unless you're just that big a fan of those actors.
