10 Games that Should Have Co-Op, At Least We Think So

Space: the lonely frontier

7. Dead Space

There is a time and place for everything. Horror will usually not function as a team effort if the terrors are based in a characters head like Silent Hill. But, if the scary stuff is not unlike the Alien movies; why not have a whole team of people scared out of their minds? After the "infected" ship Ishimura sends out a distress call, a rescue team is dispatched to help, and their rescue ship is damaged during the mission. While exploring the Ishimura, the rescue team encounters our scary entity called Necromorphs, that kill most of the crew. Key word here: Most. Some of the crew survives and split up from the protagonist Isaac Clark, occasionally reappearing to help. With other survivors built into the story – Co-op was an absolute possibility.

We are aware that the Wii version of the game has co-op, borrowing heavily from the House of the Dead series, which are co-op by nature. However, we'd definitely like to see the original style take a co-op approach sometime in the near future.

See that, two of us!

6. Call of Duty Series

It's always been a mystery to Co-optimus why some squad based shooter games will not allow for co-op. The military's bread and butter itself is Co-op, so why are military games forsaking this tradition to force gamers to play alone? What are squad based games? You're given a character with an optional past and identity, and camaraderie through A.I. support characters. Simple logic would tell you that these squad-mates, your pals, your homies, your family - should be your actual friends, not A.I. The way to beat the A.I. in the impending war is not to join it, but to eliminate it wherever possible.

A step in the right direction is the Zombie modes they've been implementing, but it's not quite enough. Sure we had sort of had a co-op campaign in World at War and it gave us hope hope for Modern Warfare 2. But alas, Infinity Ward would not solve our dilemma, and once again co-op looks to be relegated to an additional mode, leaving the single player to...well single players. We like some story with our co-op, thank you very much.

What do you mean there's two guys standing behind me?

5. The Elder Scrolls Series

Though the Elder Scrolls story lines tend to focus on a "chosen one" lore, but who says that chosen one couldn't have a handy friend? Hercules was the main character in all of his stories, but had a pal named Icarus there to help out. Icarus never had the god-like attributes that Hercules did, but he certainly didn't hurt to have around. We would like to see the Elder Scrolls at least attempt a co-op form similar to this, that would not compromise their stories, but rather aid the main character in some form or another. If that co-op form comes in the form of side quests, similar to closing extra Oblivion Gates, or clearing out co-op specific caverns, we'll take it!

Farcry 2 would have really suited a co-op experience.

How about Assassins Creed? Imagine the fun with two of you running over those roof tops - it may have even made up for its serious repetitiveness.

Ya know after reading this article I really got to thinking how cool a co-op mass effect would be, granted there would be slow moments, but all in all it could make for a great experience. Having one guy make and engineer, one a soldier, and one an Adept and mixing tactics to take out the enemy would just be awesome.

Biohzrd451 at 10:37 AM on 6.9.2009

Blasphemy nothing could help the repetitiveness of Assassins Creed .

smurphster at 10:41 AM on 6.9.2009
besides a few CoD's, i haven't played any of those games... i wonder why? ha!

that's a pretty good list. you should make another list of co-op fails. fable 2 would be high on that list

hedgehogaj at 10:47 AM on 6.9.2009
One of the first things I said when I played Assassin's Creed is "This needs co-op".

I think that would have actually inspired me to play Mass Effect.

Spider-Man Web of Shadows would be good too. Black Cat has almost all the same moves in that game.

pheriannath at 11:01 AM on 6.9.2009
I'll go ahead and disagree with you on the Fallout/Elder Scrolls series and Dead Space.

Mass Effect's *combat* would be awesome with co-op, but unless Bioware somehow managed to run multiple dialog trees accounting for each player's input, I just don't see how the story would remain engaging.

N3's lack of co-op was criminal, especially considering most of the game is spend side-by side with one (or more) of the other characters anyway.

I agree that Fallout and Far Cry could have used co-op. I mean, in Fallout you have a selection of AI characters who can follow you around anywhere you go, and in Far Cry you have all these "buddies". It would have made a lot of sense to have co-op in them for sure.

Great article guys!

I agree about farcry 2 I was going through the whole game thinking if it had co-op it would have been a much better game, maybe even playable at times.

Dead Space 2 might have co-op though. If it does it better not have the same linear corridor action.

One game I WISH had co-op is the upcoming just cause 2, but it seems it won't. Co-op is so big now, It would have been a bullet point (like multiplayer) when they announced the game.

phrozenfearz at 01:56 PM on 6.9.2009
I know it just came out, but Red Faction Guerrilla would have been even better with co-op. Still an awesome game.

smurphster at 02:03 PM on 6.9.2009

oh i completely forgot about that. i played the beta and had been keeping an eye on it but forgot about it after i found out there's no co-op. definitely would have gotten it if it had co-op. i'll second that!

ShadokatRegn at 02:10 PM on 6.9.2009
We'll be working on a part 2 with games that are just now coming out; or with upcoming sequels. Such as Red Faction Guerilla, and Assassins Creed(2)!

ksoze at 02:56 PM on 6.9.2009
I agree with all the games in the list. And I would add Splinter Cell to the upcoming games which should have co-op

justabaldguy at 04:32 PM on 6.9.2009
I agree with Mike on Fallout. A game in the Fallout universe would rock, but I can't imagine trying to play Fallout 3 in co-op, as much as I loved that game and love co-op in general.

I think Tenchu needs to take another stab at co-op. Tenchu Wrath of Heaven was an exceptional PS2 game. If you could have been two or three ninjas at once, it would have been quite the exciting battle!

I'll also say that I think it's time for a Half-Life co-op game. Given Alex's role in the last few titles, I think it's annoying to have to shadow her or have her snipe for you but you can't play AS her!

My opinion

Fallout 3 Yeah!!! When I'm playing with it I always think about it that "Damn! This
should have coop "

Mass Effect Well... maybe in Splitscreen, or something, but one player would control
a partner, but only in the combat scenes.

The Legend of Zelda Errmmm... well, maybe it needs, dunno, but I can play it with single-
player without problems, and I'm still having fun. Still, if it had Coop I would be happy,
because it's a Zelda game

Dead Space HELL YEAH!!! Almost every Horror-game should have Coop, like this one!
Waiting for DS-Extraction, I will have fun with it

Call of Duty Maybe there will be in MW2... maybe... it would be AWESOME!

The Elder Scrolls See Fallout 3. When I'm playing Oblivion I always think of Coop. AND
it's somewhat done by Oblivion Reborn or Oblivion Online, it's still buggy, but one day
they maybe finish it and it would work perfectly.

99 Nights I only heard about this game, haven't played with it...

Killzone 2 Haven't played with it, yet I think it SHOULD have Coop.

Far Cry 2 I don't play with it, I don't like it (Far Cry 1 was okay UNTIL the monsters
came. That ruined everything...)

GTA YES!!! This should have Coop like Saints Row 2

rafoca at 05:29 PM on 6.9.2009
You finally released this article!! I loved it.

I agree with every game mentioned there, but I must say that the most fun to play in co-op and the hardest to implement would be Fallout and Elder Scroll Series.
Man, I would love to play these games in co-op.

GTA would be great too and I donīt think it would be that hard to do, cause Crackdown and Saintīs Row 2 made it with success.

To be honest, we wanted to wait for post E3 to publish this one to wait and see if any new sequels of single player games were announced with co-op, to add to the final section. That way we were able to bring you as much awesome co-op info in one tidy package as we could! That, and we like to tease

We'll keep looking for more to add to another post similar to this, as well!

I would add these 2 to the mix
STAR WARS REPUBLIC COMMANDO
COD MODERN WARFARE
Co-op in these would be sweet

samoza at 05:46 AM on 6.10.2009
I'm actually suprised at the list. There are a lot of story heavy games there and as much as I love co-op it does not help a story based game.

For me Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 only work solo. The other games, especially GTA and KIllzone 2 would work well as I don't care about the story in either.

Mrxknown_JG at 10:30 PM on 6.12.2009

Slow? That wouldn't begin to describe it. I have Mass Effect and love it, but with another player. it would just be boring. It's an RPG with lots of dialog. An character choices that would only affect player one and only player one could chose.

So it would be that no player, but player one could have a conversation with anyone else. Of course, I think that could be amended to the other players are forced to either be unable to talk to certain people or for vendors they would just stick to the sales portion and none of the personal questions.

Still, it's a game ruled by dialog (which i love) and co-op would not fit the style.

Of course, the sequel will have a mini-nuke like *puke* Fallout 3...so crap can come from anyone I guess...

I never talk when I play online on COD. No one really says anything worth listening to, or no one talks whatsoever.
