Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Like Halo: Combat Evolved, I dare say that Modern Warfare changed the face of combat shooters that are played in the first-person perspective. The default controls of Modern Warfare have been ported to plenty of other shooters, securing its niche as one of the definitive games of this generation...so far.

With Modern Warfare 2 on the horizon, will its predecessor hold its place as one of the most popular online games played today? We don't know, but the recent flood of Modern Warfare 2 information has inspired your resident gun nut to return to the original; quite literally the first current-gen game that landed at the McLaughlin home.

Killstreaks are an event that occur several times in an online match, sometimes devastating and sometimes impotent. Getting three kills in a row without dying will grant you a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) scan, which shows the location of each enemy on your radar (provided that they do not have a jamming perk equipped). Five kills in a row is good for a one-time airstrike, and seven kills will get you an attack chopper that buzzes around the map for 30 seconds, mowing down anyone in the open.

Yeah I enjoyed the article but the title was a little misleading. I was hoping for an editorial on how few people play Battlefield 1943 intelligently. The start in open squad is almost useless b/c people don't communicate. I am sick of xbox live parties also, they have the capability to talk to you but are too busy conversing with each other to be included in your team tactic heavy game, such as Shadowrun/ Halo Bigteam objective, and '43 or Bad Company. I wanna leave player reviews on all of these people but Xbox Vista takes 30 seconds to load the screen and an additional minute to send and verify the review. ARRRGGG. I know it's a little late for pirate day but I wanna make all of the scurvy bastards on Live walk the plank. And that includes the engineers that thought TiVo's menu response lag was a good thing but just not enough.

LMAO! it should be talk like a pirate week

i never got into CoD4 multiplayer mostly because of XBL idiots. i can hold my own a lot better in other games, but for CoD4, you either need to be one of those guys that play 24/7 and learn every trick etc, or play with a group who actually communicate and work together. i've always been a bit annoyed by the perks and weapons too. a green player is under-equipped up against well-equipped seasoned players. that just doesn't make sense to me. i'd like a game like this that i can just pick up and play with my wife (oh yeah, forgot to mention, no split screen). i like the killstreak rewards in theory but i was rarely able to use them since i rarely got more than 2 kills before dying. obviously i've never found a good group to play with.

i'm hoping MW2 will be a little easier for noobs. i'm sure i'll like the campaign, i usually do, but i'd like to have some fresh multiplayer games i can really get into.

Well, the M-16 A4 is a very broken weapon and you start with it at level 1. The MP 5 is a very good weapon as well and you get it at level 1. The M40A3 is my favorite sniper rifle in the game, and it is available at level 1. The problem with CoD4 is that people die in less than a second, newbs can't learn to play because they die before they realize they're being shot at.

Another Annoying thing about the Call of Duty games is that when a map pack comes out it makes playing multiplayer a pain. Because your constantly getting kicked out of matches cuz. you dont have all 3 map packs that cost 10 dollars each

I had my best MP experience playing several one-on-one matches with one guy that was like level 30 and I was in my teens. And I beat him a good number of times (I would say majority) because where he could run around silently & hear my footsteps & claymore traps.

He still couldn't find me if I just moved to a different spot or hid in the bushes. It was fantastic! He was a good sport and we had fun together, he shipped off for a tour after that, but I saw him online a few times last fall. Hope he's well.

COD: World at War has a Rookie playlist that locks after a certain level. So noobs can get the hang of it before jumping into the regular games. And it's still ranked.

On the flip side, it also has a Veteran playlist that you can only reach after level 20, I think. I can't remember exactly.

There's also the Lone Wolf playlist, which doesn't allow parties, so the matchmaking will keep everyone around the same level.

Hopefully these sensibilities will carry over to Modern Warfare 2.
