E3 2011's Best Co-Op Game and Coverage Wrap-Up

Editorial

It's hard to believe, but the Co-Optimus Staff has churned out over 60 articles covering this year's E3.  There were so many co-op games on display, so many good co-op games on display, it almost brought tears to my eyes.  Tears of joy... and tears of pain from walking to see them all.

When all the dust settled there were a few stand out games of the show.  Ones that rose above all others as what seemed to be must play co-op experiences.  Whether they provided something unique, something intense, or something beautiful - each in their own way stuck out amongst the masses.

Here are our 6 nominees for Co-Op Game of E3 2011:

All of these titles were truly excellent, but one game seemed to change things up, and actually surprised us.  Dead Island stood out as a game trying to do something different - sure it has zombies and co-op, but a Left 4 Dead clone it is not.  Andrew spent almost an hour playing the game and had nothing but good things to say.  Character classes that must work together to bring down larger zombies, team work to heal and survive, item collection, defense, as well as character progression all contribute to what looks to be a truly unique cooperative experience.

The crafting, mission system, and NPCs, all made the game feel like the giant first person/rpg/action game co-op fans have been clamoring for.  Whether or not it actually fits that roll, we'll have to wait and see.  For now, we're very excited about the game which releases this fall on 360, PS3 and PC.

Thanks for all the great reviews. Reading them got me excited for a few games like Uncharted 3, Aliens, and Dead Island. My favorite game to read about was Uncharted 3...the news of the mix of old and new co-op modes really has me psyched.

I disagree with the choice of Co-op Game of E3, only because I believe the level restrictions hamper co-op play more than it helps it. That's why I hate Borderlands, well not hate, but have a hard time wanting to go back and play co-op.

There has to be a better and more co-op friendly approach to allow players to progress their characters without the often used RPG levels and the level grinding that accompanies it. I like Assassin's Creed: Brotherhoods approach when leveling recruits. All participants in an assignment are given points evenly, then the max leveled players are no longer given experience, thus the lower level players take more in.

Maybe mix the simplistic Batman: AA with it as well. You gain experience to fill up a bar and each full bar gives you one point used to unlock an ability or upgrade.

Anyway, I think Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is the more co-op friendly game of E3. Guess I am not too into Dead Island cause of the lack of guns and emphasis on melee.

They're all winners in my eyes. /cheesy. Seriously though, it's tough to pick nominees, let alone winners in a contest like this. I'd have had more input if more of my games of E3 had even been co-op. Inversion may have been my only other suggestion, but i didn't play it in co-op, so I don't know for sure.

Dead Island is a solid choice, but so are all of the others.

Wow! The game with a sweet teaser trailer comes off as co-op game of E3... pity there's no split screen. That really kills a co-opable (did I just create a new word?) title for me.

In the meantime, I've just picked up Borderlands GOTY so my bro and I will be revisiting Pandora (the alien wasteland planet... not the alien jungle planet) while we wait for many of these great co-op titles to come out.

Sadly there were only a handful of split and shared screen co-op games. That's probably the one disappointing thing from E3.

Saints Row 3 would've been my top pick. But a great list anyway.

Looking forward to Ghost recon the most from your picks.

Thanks bapenguin.

Indeed no split-screen love? There are many upcoming split-screen games like Gears 3, Resistance 3, Twisted Metal. They didn't show them with split-screen at E3? Or were they not as good as the nominees?

Gears 3 we couldn't get in to see, so hard to judge that one. Resistance 3 didn't show off any co-op, same goes for Twisted Metal - no co-op being shown. We only get to talk about it with the dev.
