Discussion of Age of Empires Online Summer Update Has Come of Age

Postby eastx » Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:08 am

Back in April we mentioned Age of Empires Online would be switching to a new currency system called Empire Points. Before, premium content could only be purchased for specific real-world prices and that was it. Empire Points, however, can be either purchased with money or earned in-game by completing in-game tasks and by participating in the new Alliance Wars. This month's Summer Update has gone live, making active the Empire Points system as well as a host of new features and changes.

this was such a cool f2p game, next time I try it I'll give it a fair shot but I'm not liking how they are hiding content behind another currency to "mirage" price points.

the reason for me to never play this (aside from the fact that I don't really like rts games) always was that you weren't able to equip any items beyond green quality without having a premium civilization. now I might give it a shot, assuming you can also buy premium civilization with these empire points.

also, they're not really hiding the cost, but you can now, given enough time, buy premium content without spending real money.

I really enjoyed playing co-op on this, but would have preferred a paid product model instead of freemium.

the items now do not say a dollar amount, instead they show a "Empire Points" amount, which even if you know the formula on how much per point costs (if you don't plan on wasting time to earn the required amount) you have to sit there and think about what you're actually spending. It was one of the major controversies with MS points when the xbox 360 first came out. Hence why I said they're hiding the cost behind a silly point system to trick you into thinking you're not spending money or something worth money.

It's always $5 or $10 to get a premium civilization. I don't think that's too much to spend to fully enjoy a game... But I am glad they provide more ways to get the content now.
