Discussion of Gearbox Speeds Up Mechromancer Character Class Development

Postby Christopher Metz » Wed Aug 15, 2012 9:43 pm

Looks like the Mechromancer, a machine manipulator that controls a giant, Claptrap-type robot on steroids called a “Deathtrap”, might be arriving to the Borderlands 2 much sooner than we have come to expect.

hmm, I wonder if they always planned for it to be ready at release, but have been advertising it like this to avoid any of the disdain that is often associated with day 1 dlc. or I could just be over analyzing it with my tinfoil hat.

I doubt it's a ploy for day one DLC, especially considering it will be free for those that pre-order.

That's the whole point. Many first day DLC are free for pre-orders, and this is exactly the same. They've just been marketing it as if it's extra content they're creating cause they're good guys. From my experience, you can't just cram in another character out of nowhere without it taking a lot of extra time. There's balancing, testing, game design, etc. that all take up a lot of time, especially if you suddenly have to do it again later on. This was planned from the get go.

At least this is not like missing game content where I have to pay to unlock a door or something. I have this on preorder so not much of a concern.

Well I preordered anyway because I have some faith that this will be good and there has been very few good PC games coming out lately.

As matsol said, this was all planned. Maybe its earlier than they thought but its still planned as DLC/preorder sweetener.

I guess we could make a distinction. Yes, this may have been planned for a while now, but I don't feel like this is cut content. I don't necessarily mind day-one DLC as long as it adds something of value and is not content cut only to package as DLC.

Ok, seriously guys. I would be willing to bet that this was one of the classes they were considering when they deciding what 4 classes to put into the game, and then just kept the idea around. Just because they *thought* of it before release, doesn't mean it should already be in the game at release.
