Post Resident Evil 5's Split Screen Mode Examined

The above screenshot is taken from Resident Evil 5's same box split screen mode.  It's a mode that a lot of developers seem to leave out nowadays in co-op play, so it's one we shouldn't take for granted.  But the folks over at Destructoid, well lets just say they are throwing a hissy fit about it.

As someone who often games with his significant other, sitting side-by-side on our couch, this was kind of unacceptable. Difficult to see on our "average" 34" high-definition television, it took awhile for each of us to adjust our eyes to the two tiny, individual screens. Items lying around Shanty Town were difficult to spot in the heat of battle, and we'd have to squint to see subtitles. In short, split-screen cooperative play was more frustrating than enjoyable.

They have a point in terms of usability.  It also depends on screen size as well.  Resident Evil 5 isn't the first game to utilize something like this, in fact, the recently release Call of Duty: World at War utilized the exact same thing.

But lets look at this further.

Honestly, between all three...I like the RE5/COD style split. Halo 3 does the same thing when there are three players, so that everyone has the same advantage.

" Left 4 Dead actually allows you to choose either horizontal or vertical split" I didnt know that I own the game. How do you do change it from Vertical to Horizontal? I thought I have been in every menu? PS I have the xbox 360 version can it be done on that?

Thanks!

Whenever I play Halo 3, or Gears 2 in splitscreen for a long period, I get a pretty good headache. I don't when I play Left 4 Dead (as in the shot above). It's almost as if the super wide screen is what's giving me the headache. I'll take a smaller field of vision over a peripheral vision workout anytime!

It's in the pause menu, under Audio/Video options.

Not going to be a problem for me, I only play online. No one plays splitscreen with me cause I have no one to play it with. :D

Oh my god... Don't be angry, but I think in CoD5 the splitscreening method was utter s**t. And now if they'll make it like that in RE5... Why can't you use the WHOLE screen??? I mean you just draw a line horizontally or vertically and one player's here the other's there, NO BLACK SPACES!!!

See, personally I'd rather keep the correct perspective. It might make it harder to snipe or something, but it's going to make it easier to see the level and surroundings.

I'll have to take your word for it, I'm not going to be able to give it a try

I found it weird when I first saw that screen thing on Halo 3. It was weird, but you lose just a few of the screen and that wasnt bad. But I played Resi5 on a 42" TV and me and my girlfriend were having a bad time trying to find things. You lose so much on resi5 offline co-op.

I'm hoping this isn't some new trend game makers are trying to take.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but if they would just stack them so they are lined up, I could have my HDTV do its auto zoom/stretch/scale magic to fill the screen. I do it with Resistance 2 and it works wonderfully.

With them staggered like that, it limits my options.

Here's a guide I made, concerning on the split screen of RE 5

I was also thinking that the split screen sucked. Now I had changed concepts bout it

Now I have no more reason on selling my RE 5 ^_^

Like Blakepro said, I zoom in my HDTV via video reset

And I thought having a 36 inch HDTV was great.

Doesnt lowering the resolution make the game look muddy though?
