Post 3D Realms Shut Down, Duke Nukem Forever Gone Forever?

Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you the end of the longest running game in development.  No, Duke Nukem Forever has not finally been finished.  Instead it appears that 3D Realms has shut down, closed their doors, and ceased to exist.

After 13 years we finally got a screenshot or two of Duke Nukem Forever with the release of Duke Nukem 3D on Xbox Live Arcade; but even that game couldn't save the studio.  According to Shacknews 3D Realms employees have been let go, and Apogee may have been affected as well.  We did just receive the following statement though concerning the upcoming Duke Nukem Trilogy

Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned.

Holy crap, I'm kind of blown away. Had there even been any rumblings of financial problems with them? That just seems like the end of an era, or a legend or something.

I'm really truly sad about this. I'm also kind of shocked it took this long.

Another vaporware product gone the way of the DoDo.

Maybe we'll see Take-Two give the IP to another developer to finish it up.

start over might be a better bet. generally speaking, software that stays in the development cycle for that long and has no scope, winds up being garbage. the wikipedia article on this game is a good read btw.

Take-two still owns the rights of DNF. Don“t worry! This game will be released eventually! :)

My question is this: at what point did 3D Realms decide Duke Nukem Forever was actually a vaporware joke? 2000? 2001? 2002?
