[Review] - Left 4 Dead 2 Co-Op Review

Postby pheriannath » Mon Nov 23, 2009 11:22 am

Coming a mere year after its predecessor, swathed in a dodgy boycott, you'd be certain to think that the sequel to last year's Co-Op Game of the Year would be a tough sell. Luckily, you'd be wrong. Dead wrong.

Excellent review, Mike, and I appreciate Nick's comments as well. I usually play split screen with my son, and I've found the game significantly harder. The bot survivors don't stick with you nearly as closely as in the original. Plus the combos of special infected are insane. Put the two together and there are some really frustrating moments. It's still great game, though.

"Luckily, you'd be wrong. Dead wrong."

I C WUT U DID THAR.

I love the raised difficulty; it actually makes you WORK TOGETHER to stay alive. Of course, this game is HORRIBLY FRUSTRATING when you game with n00bs, but otherwise a fun co-op romp!

The difficulty jump when you turn on Realism is insane, makes you really think about every step you take because getting nabbed by a special can spell doom for the group much more often than you'd think.

I've only played the demo, but personally I feel like along with difficulty, a lot of new campiness was added. I'm back to square one with this title, in that I'm not a believer yet. I liked the simplicity of the original. This one just seems like there is too much to get distracted by. I just want to shoot zombies.

Sorry...but I think you're way off Txshurricane if you think campiness was added. Valve has changed quite a bit around to get rid of the closet camping that was rampant in the original.

Honestly I would really recommend you give the full thing a try as the demo really doesn't do the game justice. I really feel that despite all the additions, they haven't detracted from the original purpose and have instead served to bring the game to an entirely new level of awesomeness.

As for the bug you referenced Pher, it was addressed today and any missing achievements should be returned by weeks end.

Also, I am seriously loving the Scavenge mode. My one complaint regarding the versus mode was the length (games could often take 2 hours w/ good teams). Scavenge mode gives me something I can play quickly and get off which is important for someone with a family.

I have the agree this is a vast improvement over the first.

Almost all the issues have been addressed the experience as a whole is now much more fulfilling and the levels have alot of life with the expectation of The Parish it seems to be the most lackluster out of the five.

Yeah, The Parish isn't very interesting with the exception of the bridge finale and the alarm car alley.
