[Review] - Dynasty Warriors 7 Co-Op Review

Postby pheriannath » Mon Apr 11, 2011 7:55 pm

You’d think after six main series entries and several spinoffs to the Dynasty Warriors series, Koei would grant us our PhDs in Asian History with a focus on the Later Han Dynasty, but alas, they’ve decided we need one more refresher course and thus, we have Dynasty Warriors 7.

Add at least a half point to both scores if you're a fan of the series like Jason and I. Just throwing that out there.

Just echoing and backing up Mike's sentiments with this entry. Having played almost every main entry in the DW series (with a slight toe-dipping into Samurai Warriors [big fan]), this particular entry really comes together well as far as the story goes and tends to stay fairly true to the historical fiction laid out in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. It is rather baffling that co-op has been dropped in the Story mode as pretty much every mission has you fighting alongside others, and that's my biggest gripe about the whole thing.

Ok, my question for you (and anyone else who's played the game) is this: how many kills (ahem... KO's) were you getting in a single mission? Cuz my friend and I basically just play these games to see who can defeat the most amount of soldiers, and unless we can get up to 4 digits, it's usually not as fun, haha.

KO's have definitely gone down, on average, for missions. Through the Story missions, you can probably get around 1000 for a good portion of them, but Conquest missions are more like focused strikes against a target or to get a target to a location so KO's are diminished. That being said, there is 1 Conquest mission (which Mike hinted at) where you can easily rack up 1200 KOs each.

To expand: there's an achievement for getting 3,000 KOs in a single mission, and one for getting 100,000 total during your playtime.

i am kinda surprised that there was no mention of the online coop system. after getting the game and friend and I did some conquest on live, and we soon found out that there was something very strange. From what i can tell it seems that each player sees their own version of a soldier or officer but they share health between both players so as i am wailing on, lets say Zhou Tai my friend would just see the same officer standing there but loosing health. so its not really game breaking or anything but it did make it a bit strange to fight side by side, and it just encouraged us to split up more often. so we never would get to see those sweet 2 person combos and what have you

Online co-op worked as I expected it to, the only oddity we experienced was that powerups sometimes only appeared for one player.

i thought it was a little lame to be honest, still love the game and still play online but if i had to choose between local coop or online i would rather do local.

The KO count actually maxes out at 9,999 kills. I managed to get it up there at the Battle of Chibi...my game glitched, and massive waves of enemies continously spawned in this tiny little area.

As for the co-op, I was slightly disappointed with the limitations. When it comes to local play, I think I had more fun skirmishing in DW6. However, playing online with friends in other countries was a lot of fun.

The game is to repetitive to the others.
You know, and the graphics are alright, pretty modern.

If you've played Dynasty Warriors before, its basically the same stuff.

But if you want a fun co-op experience killing endless hordes of enemies it's worth getting.

let's be honest Dynasty Warriors really doesn't have much of a story. Mostly map battle after map battle with a few cut scenes here and there (and if your on co-op no cut scenes so far from what I can tell in conquest).
