Discussion of Sonic 4: Episode II to Feature Tails. Could Co-Op be in the Cards?

Postby eastx » Wed Jan 04, 2012 7:00 am

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, the long-awaited return to 2D gameplay for the Sonic series, met with a mixed reception when it debuted on consoles in 2010. Part of its back to basics approach included ditching longtime partner Miles 'Tails' Prower, the flying fox with a voice that makes you just want to smack him. And of course, this guaranteed that Episode I was a single-player affair. But SEGA has recently released a teaser trailer for Sonic 4: Episode II that promises the return of Tails, along with classic nemesis Metal Sonic. Dare we hope that Tails' presence means that Sonic 2-style co-op will return as well?

No thank you! Sonic is such a ridiculous fast-paced game that it would be infuriating to be stuck as player two. Remember playing Sonic 2? The only time the player being Tails actually had full control of Tails and could contribute was at boss battles, which were only every couple of Acts.

Even if the game was to do a split-screen local/ online co-op, what would be the point? The two players would rarely be together at the same time based on how fast the gameplay is.

I see what you're saying, Bob, and I've found myself thinking the same thing. But at the same time, Sonic 2 was (as far as I can remember) my first co-op experience on consoles, so even though it was BYOB style, I sort of have a soft spot for it. I'm not sure if you played Sonic 3, but I'm sure you would agree that the co-op in that one was much-improved, and I hope Sonic 4 Episode 2 could improve on it even more =D

The only Sonic game I played in co-op was Sonic 2. I used to be Sonic and made my younger sister sit there with the controller in hand and wait around for the boss battles (it was helpful that Tails was invulnerable so it wasn't like she could die.) I'm just basing my view on my experience with Sonic 2 and that any other Sonic "traditional platformer" I've played has had the same quick-style gameplay, so I just find it hard to imagine an immersible co-op experience. Though like you said, if anything it will be another addition to the list of BYOB co-op titles, which I guess could be good for playing with younger members of the family.

In Sonic 3 Tails was quite useful in co-op since he could fly and carry Sonic to places that were otherwise unreachable for him. But I do agree that in the second game, Tails was only somewhat helpful in boss battles.

Sonic 2 had head-to-head splitscreen races. Split-screen co-op would be good for this.
