Discussion of 343\'s Sparkast Explains the Lack of Firefight in Halo 4

Postby bapenguin » Wed Apr 18, 2012 10:14 pm

Game Informer put out a nice article about Halo 4 in their May issue, however, it stirred up a bit of concern on the internet. One of the bullet points that shocked us the most was that Firefight, the 4 player co-op mode from Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach was dropped. For many Co-Optimus readers, Firefight was their favorite part of both of those games. 343 have heard our outcry, and they've addressed Firefight in the latest Sparkast.

I'm actually glad, this shows that instead of just mindlessly churning out a sequel like CoD has been doing, they want to try new things and not rely on the same modes as before.

Agreed, but let's also hope that they are doing this for the right reasons and not because of any pressure from higher-ups.

"Wolfkill" - Kill 20 enemies while wearing the wolf patch

Fantastic name. And BTW, does Frank O'Connor look a bit chubbier than he used to, to anyone?

To quote the article: "This should help newer players who aren't sure if they want to participate in PvP, by allowing them to build their character and unlock weapons before taking the leap to PvP."

We're on Halo #4, with a spin-off and a prequel under our belt, and the whole co-op craze is built upon how many gamers are tired of dealing with multiplayer crap. This quote tells me that they're trying very hard to open the doors to better co-op, but their thinking is still bogged down in the thought that we still want to play multiplayer once we're done with co-op.

COM'ON MAN! What about older players who want nothing to do with verses multiplayer of any form? And will we actually see a co-op game with more than 4 players, one that will involve access to all the vehicles?

Six words will make me go reserve this game today: HIJACK SCARABS AND PHANTOMS IN CO-OP!

Well, the Covenant are allies now right? So we will be fighting a new enemy. But still, I agree like players do more what the Spartans in Halo Wars could do.

Perhaps my paraphrasing wasn't the best. It sounds like they're trying to break down the barriers between each mode and make it a more unified experience (each having some real connection to the story). Of course they want you to try PvP, after all, they've spent a lot of time creating it, but they're not going to force you into it. They're trying to ease the experience of starting off in PvP, if you choose to do so.

That said, I agree, I'd like to see co-op missions with 8 players. Maybe not through the campaign, but Spartan Ops seems like the place to experiment with higher numbers. They haven't (to my knowledge) given any numbers yet, so we'll see.

@Mrxknown_JG: If I were to marry Kiki, I'd take her last name. Just sayin'. And yes, Frankie is looking a bit bigger. I think someone needs to start a workout plan & diet for game developers. Sounds like they mostly eat garbage and never work out. Oh wait, that describes me perfectly. Crap! At least I have a high metabolism.

I think it is essentially the same from Halo: Reach. Level up through campaign, co-op mode, and/or MP. It all funnels into the same pool.

The only time I played vs. in Reach was with TroNada in Invasion mode. That at least had objectives and a focus team effort.
