Online Co-Op: Co-Op Play is available over the internet or an online service like Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Each player needs their own system, game, and internet connection.

Couch Co-Op: Couch or Local Co-Op allows players to use one copy of the game with multiple controllers to play co-op. This includes both split screen play and same screen play. Couches are not required.

SplitScreen: The TV is split into multiple screens so each co-op player gets their own viewpoint. The screen could be split vertically or horizontally.

LAN or Systemlink: Co-Op Play is available over a Local Network or System Link Connection. Most likely a router will be required, but you may use a crossover cable in some cases.

Drop-In/Drop-Out: Players can join or leave a cooperative game session at anytime without disrupting an existing player's game.

The Co-Op Experience:
Classic beat em up action for two, with good customization. Each player can choose a different body, hand, and legs.

Background:
Enemies come in pairs, with first and second player colors respectively. Players have a wide variety of moves, of which include picking objects and enemies, grabbing the enemies arm, and if the enemy doesn't have a primary arm, then the next thing the player can grab is the body, which can then be drained to replenish energy.[WIKI]

This game is awesome! When I first got it I took it to my friend's house and we played the first two levels for hours because one of the controllers was broken... couldn't do a long jump! But back in the day I was blown away by the customization feature; When you turn the power on you design your robot, different armors, different weapons, different legs. Each component would have different properties, such as springy legs for extra high jumps or tank track legs that you could use to do a driving attack. If you like side-scrolling brawlers and have out-played Streets of Rage, definitely give this a shot... It's quite possibly better in my opinion!
