Beyond Co-Op, September 6th to September 12th
The stories for this week:
Another classic video game console celebrates a milestone this week. Sega's Dreamcast was released in North America ten years ago this past week, on 9/9/99. Though the console was short lived, it has developed quite a following, even a decade later. Many features of the Dreamcast were ahead of its time, most notably a standard modem and internet support allowing online co-op for the first time on a home console. To celebrate the 10th birthday of Sega's final console, we'll take a look at some of the best co-op games the system had to offer, as submitted by staff and readers. The Shoot 'Em Ups
If you happened to catch our first interview with the good folks from Telltale Games, you'll likely remember that we had the opportunity to do two separate interviews with two different groups of folks from the development company that's leading the revitalization of adventure gaming. In our second interview, we sat down with Mark Darin, Designer/Programmer at Telltale Games and the director for Tales of Monkey Island Episode 2: The Siege of Spinner Cay, to talk about what influenced the making of the Tales of Monkey Island series, as well as how you can find co-op in the least likely of places.
Elemental: War of Magic is an upcoming Stardock project based on and set in a world of a book by CEO Brad Wardell. The basic premise of the game is a turn based strategy RPG that's both easily accessible and runs on a large range of system configurations. In fact, the current goal is to get the game running on a Netbook. We got some hands on time with the game at PAX and came back with some impressions.

We had the great opportunity to meet Bruce Hawver, CEO of SteelSeries gaming gear, this year at PAX. From the very get-go, Bruce was eager to display some of his finest wares, and his great energy comes through in his company's products. From mousepads to headsets to custom drivers...SteelSeries has an impressive pedigree, and we got to see some of the latest hardware available, and hardware soon to be released.
We've got a bit of PAX swag to give away from the show, and believe it or not we still have a few more articles of coverage to post!
Hot off a solid showing at PAX 2009, previews here and here, Bethesda and Splash Damage have released four new screenshots of their eight player co-op title Brink.
We've got a pretty interesting story for you today, regarding upcoming zombie slaying sequel Left 4 Dead 2. You'll recall that many people were understandably upset at the announcement of L4D2, coming so soon after the first game, and before any DLC had even been announced. An internet petition and boycott ensued. Valve decided to fly the two most vocal boycotters out to check things out and hopefully smooth things over. (I guess internet petitions do work after all!) Interested in what these two have to say after the visit?
The upcoming issue of Game Informer magazine will unveil some details about the four player co-op game Crackdown 2. Continuing on from the first game, it appears a zombie virus is spreading, and the civilians have banded together to form a gang and destroyed the Agency. Day and night will play a crucial role in the game, and freaks will be bigger and badder than before.
Soutpeak Games has announced the retail version of Trine should be available on store shelves right now. The digital version was released earlier this year on services like Steam, and the PlayStation Network version...well lets just say we hope to see it before the holidays.
