The DLC was release this past Fall for the consoles and will be included automatically for the Windows version. Comrades is separate from the single-player campaign and allows groups of up to four players team up online to take on the various beasts and monsters within the kingdom of Lucis. It's kind of "Monster Hunter"-esque in its own way. While the title will be released via Steam and Origins as well, those versions will NOT support cross-platform play. That functionality is only for the version sold by Microsoft via the Microsoft Store.

The "Comrades" expansion allows you to create your own avatar within the world of Eos and team up with others to accept quests and take down monsters. While there doesn't appear to by any obvious connection between this off-shoot and the main game, there apparently will be some tutorial/single-player missions that will try to tie things together. Additionally, Noctis and his buddies will be added to the expansion as playable characters at some point in the future.

DLC producer Haruyoshi Sawatari recently stated in an interview that at least four pieces of big DLC are planned for Final Fantasy XV, three of which will focus on single player content around the main characters. The fourth will bring them all together in an online cooperative environment. The exact details of how co-op will work are still under wraps. When pressed for details, Sawatari said the multiplayer would be "something similar to the multiplayer modes included with recent Bioware releases like Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition".
