To maintain his lifestyle, Octodad must continue to blend into human society. Understandably (being an octopus), this is a struggle. The co-op mode tasks up to four players with controlling Octodad's tentacles. You can learn more about how that works in practice in our Co-op Review, but it seems to me that the Switch may offer a stronger implementation of this goofy form of co-op than the game's other platforms.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch has been out on PC and PS4 for over a year now, but it's finally... slithering? Undulating? Well, "octopoding" its way onto Xbox One and Wii U Q2 2015. The game's developer Young Horses will be handling the Xbox One port while Panic Button Games will co-develop the Wii U port. As in the previous versions, up to 4-player local co-op will be supported with each player controlling different tentacles of Octodad. This can provide quite a challenge as Octodad has to do everyday tasks while refraining from standing out from humans.

On October 14th, both the PC and PS4 versions of the game, Dadliest Catch will receive some much anticipated free DLC stages as a part of the game's scheduled v1.03 patch. These two missions were announced a handful of months back, which are stated to contain additional storyline within the Octodad universe, called "Shorts". The first mission, "Dad Romance" , shows Octodad going on a dinner date with his future wife, Scarlet (this is a prequel mission), after the "Cod of War" level. The second mission "Medical Mess" involves him working as a hospital nurse.

Since the game is now on PS4, console gamers can see what all the fuss was about this silly indie title when it was released on PC back in January. This version, however, will come with its own assortment of enhancements. For one, each co-op player (up to four, locally) will have their own tentacle to move around on Octodad. PS Move controllers can also be use for this as well for even crazier gameplay. Young Horses co-founder and president, Phil Tibitoski, stated via the PlayStation Blog that there have been major changes made to the "latter third of the game in particular". Adding new challenges such as, "deck swabbing and jig dancing," along with brand new disguises for Octodad to wear.

The success of Young Horse's title will definitely keep the small team going financially for quite some time. However, this doesn't mean that they're going to be making their game free any time soon. CEO Philip Tibitoski stated to Joystiq at this year's GDC event that there have been many folks questioning whether the game would be available on PlayStation Plus as a free title, simply because it's indie and on the PS4.  He wanted to be clear that there are absolutely no plans for this sort of action to occur, but they might look into a sale of some sort for the launch date (possibly).

Intended to release in March, developer Young Horses decided that they needed more time to make sure the game ran the best it could and be as stable as possible on the PS4. However, they have reiterated on their official Twitter account for Dadliest Catch that this newly announced release window shouldn't be constituted as a "delay", per se. Since they felt it would be difficult to predict when development would be 100% complete, Young Horses stands by their decision to not make a release date set in stone. To be fair, they have a very small team to make this all happen in a short time, so this can be somewhat justified:

We all know how smart octopodes (that's right, we're being pedantic) can be. Their curious brains, slimy tentacles and squishable bodies let them get into all sorts of mischief under the sea. But how clever does an octopus have to be to live on land? To wear a suit? To have a wife and be a father to two children? It's some clever hoodwi...

Octodad tells the story of an octopus in a suit who's trying to get on in life. Nobody knows he's an octopus, despite the amount of flailing about and tentacle regrowing he does on a regular basis. The single player mode puts two legs (well, tentacles shoved down suit pants) and one arm at your disposal, allowing you to move them in any direction, pick up objects, and sloppily walk around the environments. Awkwardness is what makes it fun, but you have to keep a semblance of normality to, otherwise you'll be found out. Then it's back to the ocean.
