Call of Duty: World at War Co-Op Review

Nick's Take

While there were moans and groans as soon as it was announced CoD5 would go back to the great WW, the second 4 player co-op was announced my moaning ceased.  And while a great co-op experience like Gears of War 2 may have spoiled me a bit, what Call of Duty: World at War offers is a solid co-op experience with plenty of replayability.

The competitive co-op mode is completely addictive, and in fact, when I went back to play some single player (blasphemy) I missed the little scores ticking off on the killing of bad guys.  Like Jim said, if you take the zombie mode for what it is, it's extremely satisfying and tense.  It forces players to work together through gameplay, rather than forced mechanics, and when everyone is clicking on all cylinders it's an exhilerating experience.

In the end the co-op campaign is more fun, while the single player experience is a bit more rewarding.  While I would have loved to see Treyarch tie up a few loose ends in terms of simply making everything a seamless process, what is offered is satisfying.  If anything it sets the framework for cooperative play in the Call of Duty series, and I can only imagine what's to come from future titles.

The Co-Op Experience:  The co-op campaign allows players to rank up and unlock perks in competitive multiplayer by completing challenges and earning experience points, adding continuous re-playability and team-based gameplay.  After your done enjoy a zombie slaying mode!

Score:  4 out of 5

*Note - Our review is based on the Xbox 360 version of the game.  We will have a review of the Wii version later.

Co-Optimus game reviews focus on the cooperative experience of a game, our final score graphic represents this experience. Our General Score is more representitive of the overall experience.

Whereas CoD5 may be another WWII shooter, it stands out in that it's a Co-Op WWII shooter. Although I love WWII shooters, and the history itself (I collect WWII memorabilia) this is the first one I have gotten since the first Medal of Honor. I have stopped buying anything that does NOT support Co-Op play and all I can say is..... it's about TIME someone made this! I *LOVE* this game! I've put hours into it on co-op (both PC and 360) and love it.

Great review guys, especially Jim's verbose portion. I'd only give the game a 3 out of 5. You can only complete the game in single player, something Jim alluded to, which means you can only get those achievements in single player. I know there are 2 levels in the campaign you cannot play in co-op, but is that REALLY worth making someone beat the game by themselves? Certainly not, not when "teh Haloz" even offers 4-player co-op the entire way.

In co-op all the players just seem like they're thrown in for no good reason. No attempt to justify them in the story, which is odd when you reach a spot where one guy is revived in the cut-sceen, but then bam! Four of you in the room to start the level!

Great fun on rental, but certainly not a game to buy and keep. I don't know if I'll drag myself through the single player campaign or not.

I think the score is spot-on! The COD games really lend themselves to coop play, given they're all war-based. Sure, the coop features feel a little tacked on; however, I had more fun playing this game coop than the last iteration of halo. I'm sure with a little tweaking, the inevitable COD6 will have a near-flawless coop mode.

So how does split screen look on the 360? Do they "turn down" the graphics? I have COD4 for PC, but if this supports offline split screen, this may be a 360 purchase. Do you know if the PC version has coop as well? Thanks.
