Mutant Storm: Empire Co-Op Review
Review System(s): Xbox Live Arcade
Mutant Storm Empire, like it's predecessor Reloaded, is a classic dual analog top down shooter with not so classic graphics. In fact Empire's graphics are gorgeous, with bright colorful areas and enemies abound.
The enemies themselves, called "beasties" in the game, range from the typical mechanical robots, etc., to the more "organic" kinds, such as a beastie that seems to blow its nose at you, and a giant blue fish which you kill by shooting at its giant blue (the color) balls. And while on the surface things seem fairly simple, there's a pretty in depth combo system that allows you to work with your teammate to maximize score. Which, of course, is what this type of game is all about.
To gain maximum score, you need to maximize your multiplier. How do you do that? By beastie combos. Beastie combos are obtained by shooting only bad guys of a certain type. One you shoot enough in a row, your combo bar grows by a small amount. For instance, shoot 10 green robots and your multiplier bar will slowly grow. Then shoot 10 purple ones for another combo bar increase. This is where the teamwork comes in, as you must communicate with your partner as to what enemies you are going to go for.

The co-op aspect of the game is pretty straightforward, with each player controlling an amoeba style little creature to shoot baddies. There's no special story or special modes for co-op; you'll play through the same four worlds with or without your buddy. If the game has a downside, it's that it can be pretty difficult, and it can be frustrating trying to get through certain parts. Thankfully you are allowed to continue or start the game at any section or world you've already completed in single or multiplayer (Of course, to maximize your score you'll want to start at the very beginning).
All in all if you like games like Smash TV or Geometry Wars you are going to like Mutant Storm Empire. The really nice thing is, the game can be as simple or as complex as you want.
Score:
Co-Op Fun Factor: The Co-Op experience makes it slightly more engaging, adding an additional level of strategy. But let's face it- it's still a pretty mindless game. Which is also one of the advantages of co-op mode. It's easy to pick up and play with a friend for a fun social gaming experience without having to work too hard at it.

Overall Score: 4 out of 5
Video Review
Looks like we have a conceited admin Great review!
It's great to see reviews even if I suck at these particular games. Wait...I suck at all games I especially like the video review part. Good work.Perhaps you can put what system it is for in the title?
I like that it's not written by just one person. That said, I'd love to help write a review!
I think, in the essence of time, you guys should only write the "coop" portion of reviews for games - and then cite the average review from gamerankings. For example, point out the coop fun factor, and then any annoyances of the coop elements (like, no teammate respawns, shared lives, etc). I'm betting people who come to this site already have an idea of the overall review of games, yet they're wondering exactly how fun only the coop element is. It's just an idea, but I think it would open up bandwidth for the writers so that they can add more reviews, more frequently.--Jason
Although I can somewhat agree with the above poster, I personally didn't know a thing about Mutant Storm: Empire simply because I had never heard of it before now. In this case a simple review just on the co-op portions wouldn't help me with choosing to buy the overall game when playing by myself. It may work in other cases though. Then again, remember this is the first review for the site I believe. I'm sure bap will mold it more as he goes along. He's even asked me if I would like to tag-team on reviews here and I accepted, so hopefully I can help in the process.
