Kodu Launches Co-Op Friendly Game Creation on the Xbox 360July 02nd, 2009 at 8:19 AM by Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo

While we've seen some pretty amazing custom levels on PlayStation 3's Little Big Planet, Microsoft's answer to a user generated content game is a bit different.  The toolkit is called Kodu, and it's designed from the ground up to be a visual programming experience.

While there's no way to create the game in a cooperative mode, you can create cooperative experiences and then share them with your friends.  It's incredibly easy to add more players to the mix with the easy to use script language and before you know it you can have a playground for your friends.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Co-Op "Completely Revamped"June 30th, 2009 at 12:09 AM by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

Don't let the title for this article mislead you, folks.  The actual co-op in Marvel Ultimate Alliance was great, and that seems to be unchanged.  There were some problems, though, with adding players, changing characters, etc.  The interface was a bit tedious when these tasks needed to be done.  According to Aeropause Games, after a sneak peek at M:UA2, this stuff is much better in the sequel.

Now for those that complained at great length about the co-op play in the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance, you voices have been heard.  Co-op has been completely revamped from top to bottom and it will be easier to join games, and choose characters.  This is a big plus in my book as co-op was such a chore in the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  I was never able to select characters properly when less than four players were playing in co-op, and it never felt 100% stable.

The preview is definitely worth a read, revealing some really interesting Fusion combos.  Thor summoning a whirlwind, which the Human Torch fills with flames is perhaps the coolest.  But Storm using Captain America's shield to fry a whole screen of enemies doesn't seem too shabby either.  We're really looking forward to getting our hands on this game, for sure!

Co-Op Casual Friday: Space Invaders ExtremeJune 26th, 2009 at 8:45 PM by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

My, how things have changed since the original Space Invaders debuted more than thirty years ago!  Looking back, the game seems so simple, it's hard to believe it was a national obsession.  Move your ship beneath aliens, push the fire button, repeat, that's all there is to it.  When Space Invaders Extreme was released on Xbox Live Arcade, I knew I had to get it for nothing more than nostalgic purposes.  I was curious, too, at how my kids would react to it.  In this era of open world gameplay, realistic 3D graphics, and cinematic storytelling, would young gamers get bored too quickly?

1 Million Castles Crashed In 10 MonthsJune 24th, 2009 at 6:42 PM by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

Over 1 Million Served!

One of our favorite old school cool co-op titles is Castle Crashers.  Apparently, we aren't the only ones who enjoy the game, either, according to the Behemoth development blog.  Just two days ago, on June 22, the one millionth player was listed on the Castle Crashers leaderboard.  This achievement makes Castle Crashers the fastest growing title ever released on Xbox Live Arcade.  It's good to see that such an honor belongs to a very strong co-op title!

Halo 3: ODST Campaign Co-Op Confirmed, Firefight VideoJune 24th, 2009 at 2:10 PM by Nicholas "bapenguin" Puleo

Last night I attended a Microsoft preview event held in New York City.  On display amongst the numerous PCs, Zunes, Hardware and other goodies were some upcoming Xbox 360 titles.  The first title I immediately was drawn to was Halo 3: ODST, in which a Microsoft rep was knee deep in a replay of the four player co-op Firefight mode.

Halo 3:ODST puts players in the role of various Orbital Drop Shock Troopers.  These squads are the front lines, dropped into battle from space to soften up the landing zones for the rest of the marines.  The campaign opens after the main character is dropped into battle and knocked unconscious by some event.  As you progress through the story you'll find artifacts and clues that help piece the puzzle back together.  Each clue you pick up triggers a playable flashback in another ODST's shoes.

Co-Op Release Alert: Monster Hunter Freedom UniteJune 23rd, 2009 at 12:09 PM by Marc "DjinniMan" Allie

The latest game in the Monster Hunter franchise, subtitled Freedom Unite, is being released today.  You and three others can team up together via Ad Hoc play.  One particularly cool feature of this game takes a page from the PSP's big PS3 brother: an optional install allows for quicker loading times, and presumably saves a bit of battery life as well.  Ars Technica has the details.

"Use this 'Data Install' option to shorten loading times. A portion of the game will be saved as 'Install Data' on your Memory Stick Duo," the game explains on its option menu. "The game will then load data from both the Install Data and the UMD." The install requires 578MB of memory to take advantage of this feature.

That's a good sized chunk of your memory card, but still it's a great idea.  Perhaps as memory cards get bigger and cheaper, more developers will use similar options.  Don't forget you can purchase the game at Amazon and support Co-Optimus!

Battlefield Report: June 22, 2010June 22nd, 2009 at 5:57 PM by Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin

Not everyone is a gun nut, but just about everyone loves to get their hands on a video game controller. What if you had a dozen controllers to choose from? We took our time bringing you this month's Battlefield Report...take your time reading, and choosing.

What's the Story Behind the Wunderwaffe and Flaming Hell Hounds?June 22nd, 2009 at 1:30 PM by Jim "txshurricane" McLaughlin

The asteroid in question.

Some dedicated Call of Duty: World at War players have dug deep into the mystery of the Shi No Numa zombie map (from Map Pack 2), and have even found clues in the Verrückt map (from Map Pack 1); it appears that Treyarch has put more thought into the Nazi Zombies mode than anyone realized could be attributed to a side quest.

In short, the theory holds that German scientists have acquired and synthesized element #115 -- Ununpentium -- to develop a new weapon, the Wunderwaffe DG-2. Their source for element 115 was the 450-ton Chicora Meteor, a olivine-hypersthene chondrite that landed in Chicora, Pennsylvania in 1938, and was rumored to have started a short-lived zombie outbreak. The Shi No Numa theory suggests that the Nazis were able to obtain a piece of the Chicora Meteor for the purpose of harvesting Ununpentium.

All of the clues have been collected on the Xbox forums here and Aggregame here. Check it out; it's interesting to see what has been noticed so far, and to wonder what will be revealed in the future.
